Thanks again for the build info.

Thanks! I messed up a bit on the covering, but it won't effect the way it fly's.

The SSX is a great plane! Just keep it away from trees. They don't get along very well. Good luck with it!

Installing control surfaces

Installing the control surfaces is pretty straight forward.

Cut the covering at the hinge slots. make sure the hinge slots are open and deep enough with an exacto blade. If you loaded up the hinge blocks with CA while building it will make it a bit difficult.

Insert CA hinges into slots and install control surface. Make sure gap is sufficient between the surfaces. Add a couple of drops of thin CA onto the hinge and you're done.

Tip: To set the proper gap you can either use t-pins inserted into the hinge or push the control surface tight to the wing and then flex to maximum throw in one direction to set the gap.

Electronics installation

Electronics installation is fairly self explanatory.

I used 2 Y servo adapters and 2 12" extensions for the aileron servos. I guess you could also use 2 Y adapters and 1 extension and use 1 receiver channel for upper ailerons and 1 channel for lower ailerons. If you do the upper and lower aileron option make sure to have the left and right servos installed in opposite directions.

Tip: When installing Du-bro Mini E/Z connectors a #74 drill bit (I think 1/16" is the same size) is the perfect size to widen the holes in servo horns.

Tip: Drill a small pilot hole for the aileron servos to make it easier and reduce the risk of breaking something when screwing the servos in.

Almost finished

I used a 450 motor for a mock up. When I get a 480 motor all that's left to do is get the CG set and screw everything in place.

The plans show the CG to be 5 11/16" back from the leading edge of the upper wing.

With the 450 motor and a 2200mah 3s lipo I have an AUW of 38 7/8oz. CG came out right with the 450 motor installed and the rear wing mount at 11 11/16" from leading edge of horizontal stab. I may have to move the wing forward with a heavier 480 motor. I might be able to just mount the ESC closer to the CG to get the CG right as well.

I'm still trying to figure out the best/easiest way to assemble the wings together. Trying to put the struts in once the wings are mounted to the center wing mount is a bit difficult, and I feel like I'm gonna break something. Tonight I tried installing the struts on the left and right wings and then mounting them to the center wing, which worked but it was a bit cumbersome.

I hope you found the build info helpful!

Adjusting lower rear wing mount

I just remembered something else that needs to be done.

The lower rear wing mount needs to be adjusted to set proper wing incidence.

James informed me to initially set the lower rear wing mount so the fuse has about 1/8" clearance on the bottom of the slot. It can then be tweaked so the plane performs the way you want it to.

I went out today and picked up a BP 2814-8 motor so now I'm ready for a maiden flight. With the heavier motor I had to mount the ESC behind the front strut mount and move the wing forward about 3/16" to get the CG @ 5 11/16" back from leading edge of upper wing.

The weather won't be favorable until Sunday. I'll report back after the maiden flight.

Equipment used:
Motor: BP 2814-8
Prop: APC 11x5.5E
ESC: EMAX 35 Amp with 3A switchmode BEC
Servos: 6 x Power HD 1900A
Receiver: Corona 6CH
Extensions: 2x JR 6" Y harness and 2 x JR 12" extensions
Battery: Turnigy 2200mah 25C 3s
Pull-Pull: Du-Bro Micro Pull-Pull system

Doug, you have no idea how much I appreciate you building my SSX Bipe. Once you get it dialed in, I'll be expecting the package promptly!

I hope the weather cooperates and you have a blast flying your new bipe, it looks great!

You can have it when you pry it from my cold dead hands!

Just got back from the maiden flight. All I can say is

WOW!!!!! That's not big enough... WOW!!!

If you're reading this thread and debating about buying an SSX Bipe. DO IT! You won't be disappointed. It was a blast to fly!

Flew straight right out of the gates. Didn't need any trimming. The 2814-8 motor had plenty of power with the 11x5.5 prop. I may eventually try a 11x8 prop for a little more thrust to see what difference it makes. Rolls and loops were smooth. On high rates and full elevator it was a very tight loop.

The wind started picking up a little bit right after take off, blowing fairly steady around 5 mph with gusts around 8 (just guessing). The plane was barely effected by it.

First landing I had to take a few passes to learn how the plane slows down. with the wind the plane was barely moving forward, touched down and rolled maybe a foot. I could have walked along side it and just grabbed it with my hand. Second landing I came in a bit faster.

With the 2200mah battery Flights were about 13min. Might be able to go an extra min or 2, but I didn't want to deal with LVC. I was cruising around @ half throttle most of the flight.

I was hoping that my wife would come to the field with me to shoot some video, but she's not feeling well today. Maybe next time.

Real flight model

I had created a model of the bipe for real flight. After flying the real model I can confirm that it flies like the real thing.

It's from G5.5 I renamed it with .g3x extension so hopefully it will work in older versions of real flight.

If the file below doesn't work here is a link to the real flight swap page for the model

No I haven't been able to go flying again. Weather hasn't been cooperating. If it's not windy it's raining/snowing.

I really appreciate the build log. You saved me from a couple of mistakes. I am using a PT-17 color scheme for mine. I'll post pictures when i finish.

James this is a sweet flying plane, keep em coming. Doug thanks for the build log it saved me a few headaches.
I seem to chose the PT-17 color scheme for most of my planes. Still have to place the two insignias on the lower wing.

Thanks again for all the help.
