1/2 Inch Foam At Lowes

I noticed Lowes had some 4X8 sheets of white foam (don't know what kind) and was wondering if this is too thick to build some planes with? It had some type of thin plastic on both sides that looks like it would peel off easy.

I bought the blue person size sheet from lowes that's 1/2 in. thick. Once you peel the plastic off both sides it works great.

Look for a beat up piece and see if they will discount it. That way you can test it without going too deep into your pockets.

The white foam is beadfoam and very fragile. Stick with the blue stuff. 1/4" PBIII FFF is my favorite.

whatala: guys in CA have a tough time finding the good stuff. I don't know if it's local codes (trying to be "green"), or just not enough market for it. You might try your local dollar store for the white foamcore board and strip the paper off. It makes a good plane material. Also Michaels and other craft stores have similar board, Even Walmart sells Elmers board.

Dmores: if the white foam is crumbly bead board, I'd stay away from it. (granted Cybernaught has made some really nice planes from it, but that's all he can get) There's better stuff readily available that will be lots more easy to work with.

I haven't used it, some guys say it's heavier and more brittle than blucor, but a bunch of planes have been built from it, so can't be too bad.

I don't think there is any consistency in their suppliers. About 6 months ago I saw some white foam there (1/2, 1, and 1.5") and it was clearly extruded (not expanded like beadfoam). It seemed fairly strong based on a casual inspection. At other times, I've seen something that sounds like what you are talking about. Next time I go, I'll check it out. I think their buyers just get what ever is available and cheaper.

I like PBIII too, it's fairly strong and requires a lot less reinforcing than other foams. Though, for bending, skinned dollar tree foam board is a pretty good deal.

I've seen blue and pink extruded but no white... not so far around here anyway. However foam is like a box of choc..colates, you never know what yer gonna get.
