Kepp's Crossing Near Idaho Falls

This year the annual Kepp's Crossing thread for coordinating flying trips is getting a late start. We haven't had much wind lately, or I would have done some winter flying by now. The road was plowed for maintenance to a weather station several miles east of the cliffs flying site. I drove it to the end of the plowing last Friday. There was essentially no snow at the parking area for the cliffs flying site. I would advise taking a shovel with you right now if you try winter flying on the DS hill. Though the road is plowed, you will have to park in the deeper snow at the informal shooting range and hike up the ridge right now. The snow on the front of the ridge is minimal.

Hopefully we'll get some wind so we can get some flying in and have something to report here. It's been a long time!

This year, to make things easier for out of town flyers I've attached Google Earth files for the DS hill and the other front side flying sites in the area. If anyone has another local flying location, give me the file and I'll attach it here.

The online weather sites aren't showing anything good yet, but the local TV station is forecasting wind for Thrus. and Friday. Keeping the fingers crossed!

When will the road be accessible to the top?

And how is your mini blade coming along? Will it be ready to fly this Spring.

I checked the last two threads for dates. Last year I drove to the top on April 19th. The year before that it was May 7. We're pretty low on snow this winter, so unless we have a stormy March, I think it's likely to be drive-able by mid-April this year.

Three years ago, when I found the hill, the road was open at the end of March.

I haven't started the Mini-Blade yet. I've had so many crashed planes to repair. I finished up flying in November with no flyable planes. I do have most of the supplies needed to fix it now, though, so I'm getting closer. I should reverse my RCGroups user title to, "I build slower than I DS." Either way it's pretty slow.

Awesome job of posting directions to the hill and your killer flying site, good job Cory! I wish I was still within a couple hundred miles of the hill but it's still fun to read what's going on up there. Have a great 2010.

Good to hear from you, Chris. Hope to have a good year, if the wind ever comes. Lately I've been getting a little excited when I see a forecast of 8 mph. It hasn't been enough to get me to climb the hill though.

Hi Guys,
Got out to Kepps hill today. Took my Weasel slope wing and my 1.5year old up the hill from the shootin range parking. I figure I'm probably the first one to fly up there this year in March with a toddler.

The wind was very light from the NE, so I just got in some really short flights on the "backside" . Not much longer flights than calm conditions, but it was great to get out on such a nice day. While hiking down I chucked it about 6 more times so I wouldn't need to carry it.

Look forward to following the action this year, even though I'm still kind of a front side, light wind kind of guy.
