Development of Night Flying Electroluminescent Kit


Hello,

Hope all is well and that everyone had a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

We would like to develop a Nighttime Operations Lighting Kit for RC Models using Electroluminescent Cable and Strips.

We would like to get input from the experts, the RC Modelers themselves on how to do this right.

What is the visibility range for the neon strips, or how far away can it be seen?

Weight is a major issue here for us E-Powered folks. What is the weight of both the three color kit and the single color kits? They look pretty cool. I have a micro flyer set up with high intensity LEDs and It is a blast to fly. John

Hi Ed

From what I have seen on your homepage, you already have the right idea. As always: The lighter the better.
Since I am not familiar with your kits I can't comment on their user friendliness, but I think you could do well with selling ready to install kits for varying wingspans.
I would also be neat if you could offer an option for a landing light (using a high power LED) that can be switched on/off from the TX.

Overall I think you have a winner :-)

Light Kit selection would be easier if suggested common models and layouts were available.
(i.e. twinstar, Teddy, lite stick)
Some people need to have their hands held the first time out.

To answer some of your questions:

Weight of the inverter driver = 0.8 ounces

Power draw on the batteries = 30 mA/hour/foot of Electroluminescent cable

Uses 9.6V or 4.8V battery source

We would greatly appreciate a list of the top 10 plane / helicopter models so that we may tailor design these kits for certain wingspans (thanks BLOTT).

This is Great, thanks ladies and gentlemen.

We have a new connector arriving,

0.19 inches square, the EL cable will now be connected via a male and female connector.

Yes, I'd have to think if you develop a kit specifically for the Zagi, you'll have a winner. Should be simple enough to do, considering it's basically just a big wing.

Ed,

Here's something else to think about... electrics already have a battery onboard, and carrying another just for the lighting system is inefficient. So it would be really nice if your system was set up to run off the main nicad pack... typically 8 cells for a Zagi, but can vary from 6 to 10.

Besides variable input voltage, the other thing to look out for if you do this is noise in the circuit. I'm running an EL panel system now on a Zagi 400 off the main pack, and have had to do some work to get jitters out of the servos when the lamps are on. This is not a problem at all when running on a separate battery.
