1939 Rearwin Sportster 9000L... A winters build named,,, "Wally" Update 05-18-10

I have been wanting to do this airplane for a long time... The Rearwin Sportster 9000L holds a special meaning to me. My Father used to own one of these for several years and I have many good memories with him in this plane. I have been looking for plans for this for many years and I finally found them in a Model Airplane News dated 1967 and I had a friend increase the size to give me close to a 60 inch wingspan. This build will be a hybrid of sorts... Balsa and foam will both be used. It will be powered by a Brushless motor and lipo battery. The fuselage is coming along good, still not sure if I will use foam for the skin or try to cover it with monocote. I will need to get a couple of carbon fiber arrow shafts for the spars for the wing and some more balsa for the leading and trailing edges and the spars. The ribs in the wing will be foam in trying to keep the build as light as possible with the arrow shafts going thru the center of the ribs at their thickest part along with a balsa leading edge and trailing edge and some foam cross bracing it should turn out pretty strong. In honor of my Father the plane will be named... "Wally" my Fathers name. Mudman1959

Update... 02-01-10

Finished putting in some stringers and cross bracing. Worked on the cockpit door area and the motor mount. I decided not to sell my Eflite motor and gear box and use it on this plane, fits great and I think it will work good. Lots to do yet... wing and tail, landing gear and then covering it. Well it's a little bit later now... I have a prototype landing gear on it, it hinges at the fuselage and has a rubber band wrapped around the front braces for a shock absorber. Also got the door frame done and hinged and mounted... Mudman1959

Update... 01-02-10

Worked on the Rearwin a little more tonight. Got the tail all together and one servo connected for the rudder, I need to get another Hobbico servo for the elevator. Its starting to look like a airplane... Mudman1959

Update 02-03-10

Took the prototype landing gear off and remade them more to scale to the original ones on the real Rearwin Sportster. They are a little shorter so that the plane does not sit as high as it was with the prototypes. Next item up is the wing... I need to get the ribs drawn out then cut out, once again it will be a hybrid of both foam and balsa... Mudman1959

Update... 02-04-10

Well it now has a a Radial engine... a Ken Royce 5 cylinder, 90 hp. well at least my attempt at one. The cylinders are made from a wood dowel with black string wrapped around it to simulate the fins. The heads are foam and the pushrod tubes are steel rod cut to size. The exhaust manifolds are the flexible part of a straw. I still need to make a cowl for the front of the engine between the cylinders, I am looking at the bottom of a soda can for this. Looks pretty close to the real one. Mudman1959

Rearwin Update... 02-09-10

Worked on the wings today... They look good! I need to get some more balsa stringers for them and I need to figure out if I want them permanently mounted or detachable. The wingspan is 51 inches with a 8.5 inch chord. I still need to do the ailerons, going with dual servos and a Y cord with servo extensions. The combination of using balsa and foam is working out real good. The foam is easy to cut and with balsa bracing the wing is as strong as a full balsa built one. I will need to get a couple of rolls of red monocote to cover it with. Mudman1959

Speed ring is on...

I finished the Speed Ring around the cylinders last night. It is made from thin aluminum bent and formed to fit the engine. Not quite as wide as the real one, trying to keep the weight to a minimum. Looks pretty good! Mudman1959

Rearwin Update... 05-18-10

Started the covering tonight on the fuselage... Really starting to look like the real thing! The windows will be just black monocote silhouettes since this is just a stand off scale model. Once its all trimmed out like the real one it will be nice. Mudman1959
