GoPro HD live video out!

The other thread was getting too long. Found this on another forum and tracked it back to the original (I think):

Maybe GoPro will make a better way to do this, but until that time here you go. What I'd like to know is if you can power the camera from the 5 volt USB connection so that you could use a BEC and your flight pack to extend your recording times. Looks like they used the standard definition connection in the pictures, but that just makes it cheaper for the TX half since you don't need to buy a wide band HD TX to see it.

I have not tried this yet, just thought some of you might be interested in the info. Your mileage may vary, please report back if you have success.

Wow, that's good news indeed. How did they fix the live out during video recording, thru some firmware update?

And what's a "Live-View-Archos-Monitor".
hmm..

Do we finally have a HD FPV camera?
All video out /live view have a small delay. How is the delay like? Small enough to fly FPV with it?
The author mentioned being cut-off. Not good.

Nope, this is a user found hack, so it works on existing cameras.

That monitor is just some little LCD that Archos sells, could just as easily be connected to a video TX. Note that it is connected to the standard definition output so the HD output may or may not work.

thanks village+ssm+WOBBY !

village : i agree, it should have show up more on FPV threads ?

if i understand right :

1-you turn on power on gopro
2-you put the camera on player mode
3-you play a video clip... to its end
4-you power up the USB in with external 5 volt

and then the camera is showing video out, and
you can also record while video out ?

Ok, I am thinking about giving this a go. I have a question.

The guy who posted the video on how to do it had a little switch rigged up to turn on the USB power to the camera when the time was right. Instead of putting a switch on there with the added weight could you not just take a servo plug wire and hook the positive and negative to the appropriate USB plugs? Then you take the servo connector and put it on your gear channel. When it is time to power up you just flip the gear switch. Won't that send power to the USB plug and the camera?

Just wondering. I may give this a shot in the next few days.

Mums the word.

I'm pretty sure the + and - are constant so the gear switch would not work. If you had an "RC switch", then it would work.

I just tested this with my gopro and it works like a charm - I also notice that it just takes a few seconds of power to put it into live mode then you can turn off the power and remove the usb plug if so needed. This means I dont have to carry an extra battery or weight of the plug to get live video - Just kick the camera into live mode and fly fpv - Nice!!!

So you are power your cam from the BEC? How much weight did the cam lose when you yanked the battery?

Hopefully it will only be another week or so for the new firmware and hopefully all these games can be stopped. Rumor is that they will have video out during record in this new firmware. Best estimate is end of February but I'll believe it when it's available.
