Methinks WWII played a role. But my larger point is that a lot of Republican Gloom-and-Doom predictons don't pan out. I'll never forget what a friend encountered in 1996. He worked at a brokerage firm, and one of his co-workers had a bumper sticker on his door that said, "Clinton-Gore: The End of the American Dream?"

He said to the guy, "considering that since they were elected, the Dow has doubled [and did it again before the end of the Clinton Administration] and the annual budget deficit is nearly zero [and eventually became a surplus], don't you think you're damaging your credibility with your clients?"
