Regarding the article Ken posted, it says that beer goes back at least 6,000 years, to ancient Iraq.

Archaeologists found a recipe for beer on a Babylonian clay tablet, dated 4312 BC---.

Kudos to the American Canning Industry for bringing us such an invention. Canned beer & boating were made for each other, although I personally prefer my pijiu draft or bottled.
