3D Gee Bee R3 - The Flamingo - Vids, Pics & Plans(very soon)

The Flamingo 3D turned out better than I expected! Not bad for a weekend project

I went with a paint scheme similar to the donuts models r3... but my cheap red spray paint turned out to be more pink than red

I've put a good deal of thought into the design and functionality of this one.. I wanted something that looks like the classic Gee Bee r3, but flies like a top of the line 3D model. I was able to get throws above 55 Degrees!! Aside from the motor, all of the electronic components are right around the cg... including the battery. So this thing is capable of some extremely tight maneuvers as well.

36.5" wingspan
35" long
165 Gram AUW
1400kv 19 Gram outrunner
10 amp esc
5 gram servos
3mm depron

I incorporated lots of great building techniques with this one... if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

So here you go... I present The Flamingo

This plane can be built receiver ready for $50. Plans will be available when I get my act together

Nice build. I wish I could fly like this, I merely fly to keep from crashing.

Always had a soft spot for Bee Bees ;=)
Shame about the Pink colour though. Time to step up to an Airbrush for Red colour?

I was running a 500mah 2 cell in that video. That battery is about 31g's.

I too have a fondness for Gee Bee's. Before this I designed/scratchbuilt a 30" Depron/Epp Gee Bee Biplane that I called "Jeebes".

It's a great flyer... and it proved to be invincible, because it is still one of my go-to planes.

"Jeebes" EPP foamy biplane (0 min 50 sec)

On a side note, I have to say that after recent indoor events and some outdoor flying, I've decided that the pink actually compliments this plane. It catches attention.. thats for sure

Nothing wrong with pink color on a plane. After all, we do say "she flies great."

There's a really nice profile put out by Donut company in France of the R-3 looks just like what you did. Good job
Check out the videos on u-tube under R-3. There's some realy nice large scale models with radial motors in them.
All in France.

I've seen that R3 on the donuts site... I actually had an inkling to get one. Decided to scratch build one instead. My Gee Bee Biplane turned out so good(still flying), I figured I'd have a shot at a scratch build R3.

To me the hobby is more enjoyable that way

Btw... I was never able to find a video of another R3 profile plane. Is that the youtube vid you mentioned?

Oh yeah, last night at an indoor meet at a local soccer arena, a 1/16 revo ran into the Flamingo going REAL FAST. Busted up the landing gear pretty good. Its the first damage that has been done to the plane in 15+ flights!

Hi Sl0flyer,

Great job on the R-3 Flamingo! It looks like a great flying plane.

It looks like you've got a great spot to fly indoors at, is it a hanger? Indoor flying flying is great to get through our long Michigan winters and we've been doing a lot of it down here in the GR area. TC is a great area of the state and I've spent a lot of time "up north" as my in-laws lived in Suttons Bay for 15+ years. I've did a lot of flying behind the SB high school along with many times up at Woolsey airport.

Again, great job on the R-3 and have fun,

Thanks guys... yes it is an airplane hanger. We go back and forth between that and a local indoor soccer arena. I feel fortunate to have these places to fly in

Also the 3d Sketch to prove that I'm actually working on the plans I'm considering making an EPP version next.

Could you help me with plan of this "bird"? Is it free plan available for scratchbuilt? SketchUp, PDF?

I just don't have the time to convert the Sketchup file to something that prints. If someone would be interested in finishing it that would be cool...
