Help!

AVR programmer broken! Help :)

First mistake :

Well i thought i'd upgrade my cheap 'ebay' avr programmer based on usbasp

Secound mistake :

Thought while i'd was changing mcu 48 atmel 8 tqf. Well why not use Avrdoper firmware for Usbasp. Couldn't find any users having any problems but didn't see anyone saying they had done it either....hmmm

Last mistake :

desoldered ok'ish tracks intact but lost 1 pin but could see little of it( ithought) put atmel8 on and guess what!?? Didn't work
No lights but power, windows can see it but unable too install driver ;(

Moral if it works leave it!!!

So have a printer port and no money or anytime soon for that matter.

Do i have any options ?

thx,Phil

I used PonyProg long ago with a parallel adapter but with a 74HC244 buffer. Should work with just the resistors, but the schematic you show doesn't look right. This schematic has the same pinout as the one I used with resistors instead of the buffer chip. http://www.scienceprog.com/simplest-...ga-programmer/

You also sometimes have to play with the BIOS setting for the parallel port. Think I had to set it to standard parallel port and not ECP or EPP.

PS Resistor values should not be critical.

I found several sites with wiring like you first posted, but I don't think that wiring will work with ponyprog. It supposedly works with AvrDude if you specify the option "-c dapa". Better to rewire it like the link I posted because then it should work with PonyProg and also with AvrDude.

Did you get giveio installed? You wouldn't have needed it for AvrDude with the USB programmer, but need to have it installed to use avrdude with the parallel port. http://www.scienceprog.com/moving-fr...-without-pain/

I tried to build one of the parallel dongles like the schematic you posted, and also one that used the 74HC244 buffer chip. My computer wouldn't recognize either one, never could connect. I read on one forum that "ringing" on the lines going to the port could cause problems, and that you needed to add resisitors to prevent it. There was an improved schematic provided, but I'd already spent a lot of time and a few bucks trying to build one, so I gave in and ordered an inexpensive USB unit. Digikey has them for around $35.

Well got it working kinda...
But PonyProg can't see Atmega 8 but if i push on can flash it and read off code
Big But can't write fuses right and so stuffed that up. Desoldered TQFP off yet again and tried too reset fuese but i guess heat finaly broke it and no more mcu's....Bugger

Well for any one watching i did all above but added this

changed from LPT1 > LPT2. I had used LPT.exe
Using that i could see that using LPT1 i could change any off the check boxs but using LPT2 i could.

Still didn't get me out of this hole but would if i had some PDIP 8's and problem with fuses could have just been my fault, never used PongProg before. More used too HFUSE=0xc9 LFUSE=0xef format less to go wrong

So thanks for help it just about help me out.

I'm using USBTinyisp v1, but seem to remember having that problem when I tried to change something and rebuild it. Don't remember exactly what I did, but did create my own makefile and it builds on my PC with WinAvr 20081205. I just downloaded USBTinyisp v2 and plugged the 2.0 source files in with my makefile and it builds with 62 bytes to spare. Have attached a zip with the makefile and the 2.0 source files. It may work with other versions of WinAvr, but if not you can get 20081205 here. http://sourceforge.net/projects/winavr/files/
