dazzzer, if you are learning hover orientations before forward flight keep them on until you can get the bird down on the ground safely in any orientation. If you can land when you lose it in a non tail in hover you are ready to pull them. You don't need to be comfortable in all 4 just ready to land it if when it goes bad.
You will deffinately need to pull them before starting forward flight in any case as the drag they produce will throw off forward flight and as mentioned any turns, and could lead to needless crashes.
