You had better tell Microsoft that since their operating system is ALSO suitable for playing games, they shouldn't sell it as suitable to run CAD programs on.

Wan't another outsider ?

My avatar was designed in Visio.
But that was BEFORE M$ spoiled it and enslaved it for their Office suite

Visitor from Reality
Been using DesignCAD since around 1990, when it came on a 3.5" floppy.

Strictly an 'amateur' in this CAD thing, up to my first copy of DCAD, I used some strange ancient ritual items known as 'paper' and 'pencils'. A lot, as most of my models are 'own design'. I've sometimes used Profili for wing sections, but as I only use a couple of wing sections in my designs, I've got enough of them in my 'library'.

Oddly enough, last year I 'designed' a fuselage for a wing I had lying around my shop by drawing it up the 'old way'. I suspect it took me much less time to 'draw' it than if I'd done it my CAD fashion...

Keep telling myself I need to download that freeby Sketchup thing from Google, have a play. 3D for me hasn't proven to be much of an attraction so far.

Regards

Dereck

Observation

The counts above are not easy to read at a glance, since there are several versions of some programs. The TurboCad results, for example, are visually spread out by this effect, but the total for TurboCad is 20 users.

AutoCAD is similarly distributed, but sums to 36. If you add Inventor (9 at the moment) and Autosketch, Autodesk is clearly the dominant supplier. Not a surprise.

Anyway, doing the additions for different versions, the top of the list looks this on Feb 15, 2010:

AutoCAD 36
SolidWorks 34
Sketchup 30
Rhino 28
TurboCAD 20

Incidentally, the new CAD/CAM forum has been up and running since Jan. 11, so we are past a milestone.

KeyCreator was mentioned - I'm impressed. I think a lot of people forgot about that package. We're the Canadian Distributors for it - thanks for the mention!

I also use it for programming my 3-axis router - it does full CAM too. Not a lot of CAD apps can say THAT.

AllyCAD

I have been using AllyCAD (Choice CAD as it was called then) since the good old dos days.

This is the easiest most flexible cad I have seen. Best of all it's free for the home version, limited drawing size but certainly large enough to do all I need for hobby things.

Surprised it doesn't get more mentions

I voted DesignCad 2d for windows but really use DesignCad Pro 2000 2d/3d. Since most of my drawings are headed to the laser I use the 3d function very little.
