Awesome looking and flying model. I'm really hoping there will be some red stars on the decal sheet.

Should make for a nice P-400 to buddy up with my Guadalcanal Wildcat.

If I remember correctly the P39 had less performance than the 109 anyway.

At low altitudes, where the Russians operated the P-39s, the Cobra was the 109s equal. What the P-39 lacked was the 2-stage blower it was designed for.

true. the much-maligned P-39 was a killer on the deck. There's a reason the Russians loved them.

For what it's worth Chuck Yager (?? spelling) reckons the P-39 was the nicest aircraft he flew provided you kept it below 10,000 feet. I'd also assume that he kept the nose properly ballasted with empty shells to avoid the P-39's tendency to want to enter 'flat spins' when this wasn't done. The Russians complained about this trait and this is what Bell found to be the cause.

The US Army Air-Corp really did handicap the P-39 severely as a 'pure' air superiority fighter when they removed the 2 stage turbo supercharger (very short sighted) but a similar fate befell the P-40 as well. Only the P-38 escaped the 'treatment' as it was decided that it would require the 'grunt' to intercept enemy bombers at higher altitudes, whereas the other two were seen as multi-role or "primarily" ground support aircraft essentially.

I'm assuming this will be like the other Alfa's (109, 190 etc) and have no rudder from the factory.

There is a video online at some aircraft video site that has a very sweet clip (about 10mins) of Brooklyn Bum II going through it's practice run before Duxford Flying Legends air show in 2008. If I can find a link to it, I'll whack on the Anything / Everything P-39 thread, or here.

I read Yeager's book. He flew the P-39 when he was in advanced (fighter) training. He said he "liked the P-39." Said he thought it was a good airplane as long as you flew it within its capabilities.
