Hello! I am wanting to build a brushless Slow Stick and I am hoping you guys could help me out. I don't know much about electric motors, kv, prop size, amp draw, voltages, watts, etc. I have been doing quite a bit of research but I don't know which motor/prop/gearbox/battery to use and I don't really want to spend a lot of time figuring out which one is the most efficient and that's where I'm hoping you guys can help out.

My main goal is to get flight times as long as possible with having plenty of power on hand if needed. I figure that means swinging a huge prop pretty slow, with minimal throttle. So what would be a good motor/gearbox/prop/battery setup? Also, if you could mention exact parts because, as you know, there's plenty of motors out there, some alot better than others. Also, with whatever setup you give, what kind of flight times can I expect?

Hmmm. I am not sure then why you chose to create another post when both brushed and brushless were covered in that original post. Your original requirements were for a 30 minute flight time and Xpress gave you the best options for those requirements. If you were not happy with the responses then feel free to browse the thousands of post in the Ultimate Slowstick thread which I believe is up to thread 9

The reason for posting another thread was because the only person who was providing information in my other thread was a guy who stongly recommends a brushed setup. I would hope someone could provide the same information on a brushless setup. Also, no one was even mentioning a brushless setup with gearbox, they were all direct drive.

Because brushless outrunners eliminate the need for a crappy, noisy loud gearbox. The only geared unit I will use is the fairly quiet GS 400C setup, which is what i've suggested.

I don't know why you want to go with brushless?? If you go that route, you're not going to get the half hour flight times without adding a significant ammount of weight..

I was doing some research on the EPS 400C power system, it has a EM400 motor. The EM400 motor has a 2600(approx) kv rating. The gearbox has a 6.6:1 ratio. Now, couldn't I get a brushless inrunner with a 2600kv rating, use a 6:1 ratio gearbox and the same 9x5 prop and get better power and effeciency(simply because brushless is inherently more efficient than brushed)? And couldn't I go with an even bigger prop, say 12" with a higher pitch and gear it down even more for even more efficiency? Xpress, forgive my ignorance if this sounds stupid.

just to throw a bone......I have used the following.....

Himaxx 2015-4100 with the 5:1ish (medium) gear that comes with it's gearbox.

2s lipoly 900-1100mah

Castle Phoenix 10 esc

9x4.7 apc prop

take off at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle
level flight at 1/4
fly till your blue in the face....

Honestly as long as you balance the plane properly with whatever gear you have it will fly. This is about the most adaptable airplane on the planet. Any brushless motor that weighs more than 20 grams will get it off the ground.....stop obsessing about the numbers and go fly a smile onto your face already!!

An alternate to the geared option that Nathan suggested above is to go with an outrunner and forget about gear boxes (they get damaged easily on crashes). For example, a Suppo 2215 (www.lightflightrc.com) with a GWS 9x5 and 3s 1300 will let you fly for 25 to 30 minutes on a SlowStick easily (assuming you are not doing crazy stuff :-) If you want a little more power, a GWS 10x6 will also give you 20 minutes.

I suggested a 3S 1300 battery because the tail of the Slow Stick is pretty heavy and so a light battery + light motor combination will have your battery all the way up to the nose of the plane. That power system was also also what I flew when I learned on the Slow Stick.

I just saw that you had already ordered. Oh well, you can keep this info for future reference.
