Traxxas Slash... 2WD vs 4WD
Trying to decide whether or not to get my grandchildren a 2WD or a 4WD traxxas Slash. The boys are 8 and 10 (their father will surpervise....and may use it too. All three of them are new to R/C cars. They will probably not race, but will be hard on them. I know the 4WD is about $200 more, but I really like the "beefed up" systems (basically already upgraded...ready for any battery improvements vs the standard 2WD), plus brushless motor and 2.4GHz radios. Is the 4WD too much vehicle for them? Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

4WD will improve the handling to a degree. The only downside is there is more to maintain (2nd differential, driveshaft etc...) but it's not a whole lot more than the 2WD. The 2.4 ghz system will also allow them to run their trucks whenever or wherever they please without going around and asking everyone what channel they're on. The brushless motors will also last a lot longer than the brushed motors on the 2WD version.

well the traxxas stuff does have a half throttle limiter, but even then you still have near instant exceleration with teh 4x4. i'd go 2wd, simply because should one of em wanna race (which they will, trust me, i'm a kid who really wants to race) and the 2wd gets a stock slash class, so it's entirely on driver skill, not who has the most money and the best rig and the most skill. oh yeah, the 4wd has to be raced in mod class, so it's a whoever-has-the-most-money class. and the 27/75mhz stuff is fine for a begginer, i run a savage with it and have yet to have interference. just be sure to get em on different frequency's, and get one for yourself. also check out this site for batteries: www.hobbycity.com look for lipo's by turnigy, the 5000mah(lots of run time, $20, so get each kid 2 so they can run longer) 2s 20c lipo's. hope this has helped, i;m getting the 2wd slash for xmas

Hey Jett, aren't they going to make a 4wd class for the new Slashes without making them a modified class?

i don't know. it would make more sense to me to run em in mod, they have the extra speed and ability to keep up with teh sc10's running brushless, and that's what's happening at my track, so most tracks will probably run em in mod. i still may buy one though! except around summer time or after xmas.
