I don't really mind mods to Alulas and such but that has to be the worst mod ever.

The alula is a perfect as a glider- just chuck it and catch thermals when you can.

A different attitude to RC

I tried a small ducted fan once. It was not powerful enough, but it flew!

I found a few more setup picís. Guys in Germany used the JETI DUPLEX R4 EX which is about the same size/weight and probably more readily available for you. We needed as clean/light an airframe as possible for our purposes. Only anomaly or protrusion we ended up with was the top linkage, post 1703. Fairing or ďfillĒ added 1.1 gram. Hope picís answer your questions? Good Luck! We ended up using Dream Flight Weasels, now N/A, but the Alulas proved it was possible.

Well I'm hooked. Finally got some decent weather to try it on Suday. It was too windy and the cg was too far forward, but I threw it till my arm just about fell off. Today, I tweaked the cg--much better. Almost hands off flight with just a little porposing. My son also tried it and I think he is hooked also. I bought this as a trainer for a Blaster 3 that I picked used, but the Alula is really more capable than I thought. Thanks for the help in this thread!

Nose Job

To extend the nose, increase strength and durability and place any needed weight as far forward as possible I made a plaster cast of the nose and used PlastiDip to make a strong sheath with lead shot glued inside 1/2 inch of the tip. Careful use of a non-lubricated latex baloon like product commonly found in the pharmacy provided mold release and a perfect fit on the nose. Some experimentation is still needed but this prototype definitely works as intended.

Interesting project. I like the use of the PlastiDip.

To be most effective, the strength reinforcement needs to extend back to the juncture of the nose and wing, since that's where most of the breaks occur.

What is the best way to monitor battery power when out on the slope with the small battery used on the HLG stuff? How long have you folks been able to fly before recharging. My GP sprit 2m with 600 mha will fly longer than I want. Will this 300 mah battery give me a 1/2hour?

The 300 should give you about 1.5 hrs. with some to spare. On a good day, that's not enough for me, which is why I have a 4xAAA.

My LMA has a low-battery alarm built in. It rarely goes off unless I forgot to charge!

Have fun!

Dave
