40% and larger electric power systems

This is a discussion of extremely large electric power systems. It is centered around aerobatic models but also encompasses large tow planes and other prop driven and other applications near 10k watts or more. This is not a very specific topic and the discussion will wander but there is a lot of good information in here so if you're thinking about doing a very large electric model, this is a good thread to read through for information.

Good links. I can't seem to find anywhere to actually BUY a jeti 300 though. Is it something I'm just going to have to custom order through a jeti dealer?

I'm actually leaning towards the hacker motors since I want to run a traditional prop rather than the requred 3 blade for the plettenberg.

Is there anything else out there that can be used or is that everything in the market?

I use traditional props on the Predators, no problem 2blade and 3blade Mejzlik. Very few Jeti dealers have the 200 and 300 in stock, the shop i work in have the 300 in stock but thats in Sweden.

Yeah, I just noticed on that extra's web site (is that your plane/site?) that it was using a traditional prop.

What do you think of the predator? Any opinion vs. the big hacker?

Yes its my Extra, main diffrence between the Predator 37 and Hacker A200 is the wheight, the Predator is only 1900g and A200 is 2600g. I dont know anyone who have used the A200, but the Predator 37 is widley used and mostly with the SPIN300, it has prooven to be a good and relieble combination.

One might need to consider that with todays new gen Lipo like EON-X, 14-15s i overkill, 12-13s Lipo in serie with 12-15Ah will provide the voltage and power needed for a 40% conversion. I use the EON-X30 on 14s3p config, becas of the high voltage under load i had to prop down to 29" 2 blade, the prop revs to high to be efficient, generating some cool prop sound but a bigger 2blade or 3blade would be better. As of now the power is more than enough with flight times up to 15min.

Aren't you a tad worried about recommending a battery from a company that's "dead" for the most part? I haven't seen a single FlightPower pack for sale in some 5 months plus with all the back and forth between the founder and current owners, I'd be concerned about replacement product and support...

Good information there, I didn't realize the difference in weight between the motors... especially over 1lb of difference!

I was curious, I couldn't find anything in there that listed the all up weight for your plane. How much does it weight with batteries in there?

I'm a little interested in how many amp hours I really need. 15 minutes of flight time is overkill for me and my flight style. I'd rather shed weight in favor of 10 minute flights.

I estimate 19kg with the new batterys on 15Ah, i also have EVO25 on 11Ah. If you get good enough packs that keep nice voltage under load you could save wheight and aim for 10m flight.

With the smaler 11Ah batterys its just enough to get a good CG the bigger 15Ah needs to be further back in the fuse.

Which leads me to question Plettenberg's choice of kv-values for their Predator 30 and 37 motors, which I think is too high.
(I use a lot of 5s packs in 10s configuration, and would therefore prefer to use a 15s configuration in larger planes. This would require a motor with lower kv to keep the revs down at a reasonable level.)
Despite the extra weight, one apparent advantage with the Hacker 150 and 200 series is that the motors are available in two different kv-values. For the 200, you can choose between 151 rpm/v (A200-6) and 110 rpm/v (A200-8).
For 15s, the A200-8 would propably be best, giving an estimated loaded rpm of around 6000 rpm.

Jocke, could you please post a link to the shop where you work?

Regards,
Magne

When they developed the Predator it was ment for the lipo batterys of that time, 09 we have seen a huge improovment of Lipos and perhaps Plettenberg need to do a lower KV motor for those that wants to use it with 14-15s and bigger props.

Interesting... that works out to about 41lbs. That is a little heavier than I strictly want to go but of course there are some airframe differences to consider. I'm shooting for 1-2KG lighter than your all up weight.

How are your flight times with 11AH?

I have actually not messured the wheight, and as long as i think it flyes good, i dont bother. 11Ah EVO 25 its aprox 8-9min. Next conversion i think will be a 38%, only 2p, 8 instead of 11 servos, less wheight and less but enough power.

I'm only shooting for a certain weight so that I can get the performance I want. I know how my sukhoi flies at 38lbs with the DA150 so that's the most I want it to weigh after electric conversion.

If you're getting 8-9 out of the 11AH then I'm guessing that 12AH will be just about right to get the 10 minutes I'm shooting for.

Battery Puffer
Another option would be the Neu 2230 1y, 6.7 gearbox, Castle HV140 controller, 12 to 14s and a 32" prop.
