Turnigy motor smoked first run!

Hi

I have this motor by Turnigy http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...r_Eq:_AXi_2826. I ran it on a plush 40 a esc today and the motor smoked after about 30 secs at half throttle pulling about 18 amps on 11*7 prop.

Are all electric motors this unreliable?Or is just Turnigy? Any recommendations for a reliable electric motor/esc combination? Is it a case you get what you pay for!

Thanks

That shouldn't have happened. If it really was only pulling 18A.

or was that 18A at half throttle? that's a different kettle.

You don't say what pack..

Prop recommendations from these guys are rarely safe and you chose one that was even worse.

BTW those motors are from china. And will burn out if you put too big a prop on them too.

we've supplied dozens of turnigy's no problem. But then we do test them first,, and supply our own ratings based on actual experience, rather than random numbers from the Chinese national lottery draw.

You cant bash the manufacturer if the distributor indulges in fantasy, and you cant bash the manufacturer if you overload their motors, either.

If that was pulling 18A at half throttle, it would have been likley to be around 54A at full, which is total overload. Even by hobbycity's standards. It might well have been pulling peak currents of over 60A at half throttle, too.

You still didn't say what pack you had it connected too, either.

What cell count was the battery, if you were using a 11x7 I think 4s 14.8V would be the max and probably would pull 60 plus amps on 5s 18.5V

Hi Jus
Your Turnigy is in the class "Kv 900 rpm/V wght 163g"
On 4S with an APC 11x7E it is overpropped
But I don't know if you are 3S or 4S (?)

You could compare using Scorpion Calc freeware
SII 3020-890 (I measured Kv 865 rpm/V on my sample), wght 166 g
On APC 11x7E that Scorpion consumed 42A on 4S = 623 W
The ratio is 3.75 W/g very high for Kv 865

Suppose your Turnigy is 920 rpm/V (generally HC is announcing lower Kv than real) it's normal to smoke it or to smoke your 40A ESC or both
Louis.

FYI

Turnigy 3548 900kV with 11 X 7 APC E.

That's 920W for 61A.

So by going by this set up i was not using too big a prop.. or was I?

I just want a reliable setup using an Aeronaut 11x7 folding prop and Flightmax Zippy 4s1p 3000 mah battery...any recommendations of a proven design would be welcome.

Its to go in a ASW 28 glider 2.5m auw approx 2400g

Thanks
