Pledged to Always Chase Wind
deputybuzz's Avatar
I have seen a lot of comments about a race taking flying time away from those not participating. Is this because of frequency conflicts or lack of airspace?

The attached image shows our usual race course over the gravel bowl to the west end of the slope. I pasted in a few more race courses to show just how huge the Point really is. In years past the total available airspace has not been utilized. If frequency control is the issue then informal MOM course or Best time of Day F3F could happen to one side.

You can't race with other planes zipping around. eventually some guys fly into the course and it just causes problems. Also races take forever to run when you have a lot of pilots. Keep it a fun fly!

I like the fun fly atmosphere.

One more thing to stress is to make sure the parafoil guys aren't also having an event on the same weekend.

An escalator up widowmaker would also be nice.

To add to what most anti-race people are saying, I think racing has an element of stress bundled with it.
For most of us, Soar Utah is synonymous with relaxed flying.
I love to race. But I go to Soar Utah for relaxation.

I can heartily recommend the ASSAN X8 2.4Ghz module system; I've been flying them for the last 2 years in all sorts of models including large and powerful 1.4KW electric ducted fan jets and so far the system has been rock solid without a single glitch. The price is also amazingly affordable and extra receivers cost no more than an average priced servo.

Not until you realize that additional receivers will cost almost as much each

Last Soar Utah the State parks granted exclusive use of the slope to R/C only for the event, I am sure they will do this again for our event.

The point of the mountain is a state park and the hang gliders and para gliders will have there events just like us and they will have to reserve the slope the same as our group so they can fly without any R/C around.

so to sum it up don't worry be happy

Good idea on the exclusive use of the hill. I was at the event that the incident occurred between the groups.

I say screw the hotel and designate a camp area for everyone to camp. $50+ bucks a night better spent on raffle tickets or gas.

DS is probably a bad idea for those who don't do it on a regular basis. A bunch of DS newbies mixed with good air probably will end badly.

Move it to Colorado!!!

Get Hooters to sponsor!!!

Ok if we are wishing (like the road to the top of widowmaker), here's mine.

1) A mini bar at the slope
2) The Soar Utah Bikini Team serving the drinks (and no, I don't mean Clarence or Hoopes in a bikini)
3) A plane retrieval service (preferable members of the Bikini Team)

I'll probably think of a few more later....

Brian, we have had many a campfire conversation at CO events where the topic of bikini clad sherpa girls has come up. Seems to be the topic of choice after plane retrievals on 14,000 slopes.

In all seriousness we have had local breweries sponsor our events among other non-slope related sponsors. Free kegs of beer sound good?
