The above link is to sites I use to help predict the weather at Peterson Butte, and a recommended textbook for amateur meteorologists.

Vic and I were talking today about how to predict good soaring at Peterson Butte, and how to interpret the MM5 sounding graphs, so I started the weather discussion at the link above...

I vote for Pat being our official weather forecaster for PB. So Pat, please post your long term and short term forecasts for us all to plan our trips. Thank you for supporting the slope fraternity.

Great information on interpreting the wx, Pat. Thanks. I will still defer to your wx interpretations though as Tom suggested. I got a copy of Understanding the Sky based on your recommendations and plan to make my way through it. Good to see you this past Tuesday.

Regards,

Vic

Well, I am going flying tomorrow, I just don't know whether I will be going to Ecola or Peterson Butte.

Ecola will be stronger predicted winds of 13-20, some chance of rain, poor LZ.

Peterson will be lighter winds of 8mph, no rain, good LZ, chance of thermal activity around 1pm or so.

Do I want to fly in strong winds with my foamies at Ecola, or do I want to fly weaker wind/thermals with my scale planes? Neither prediction looks good for my new racing plane "AldiiJ".

I'll decide in the morning when I hear the ACTUAL wind speed in Salem/Corvallis.

========== It is morning time and I am going to Ecola St. Park to fly today.

Pat, Hopefully you went to Ecola. PB was pretty light. I was flying a HLG Huron and a friend was flying a 2m Fling thermal. There was some wind in our face but it didn't seem to be coming up-slope much. We eventually hiked up the hill a ways and got some decent lift but nothing very strong.
It was a gorgeous day though, who'd a thunk flying in Tshirts at PB in late December!
Tom

sorry, didn't see that you edited your post and said you were going to Ecola. Hopefully you had a good windy day.

Lots of wind, but the clouds limited how high I could fly. Difficult to fly when you can't see the plane! On occasion, the clouds were right at launch and I had to fly below for awhile just to keep it in sight.

Good flying, but not great.

Doesn't it look like non-stop rain? We were going to shoot down from Olympia but have pretty much bagged it due to wet. Could always change our minds....
