Scratch built Depron Ki-61 Hien "Tony" plans and build log
It all started with the last flight of my beloved GWS Zero (may she rest in peace now). Of course it was a technical failure...
Now I had a power plant left, that needed a new home. So I decided to stick with a Japanese fighter and chose the Kawasaki Ki-61 "Tony" I had in my mind for some time. I always liked it because of it's sleek design. The name Tony was given to it because it was assumed it must have been a German or Italian design. It looked too different than the Zero for instance. If you want to know more, go to one of my favorite places, the Virtual Aircraft Museum:http://www.aviastar.org/air/japan/kawasaki_ki-61.php My favorite site for drawings is this Russian one: http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw_fw.html, a great collection. Anyway I made the plans for 6mm and 3mm depron and put it up here. Here are some pictures I grabbed from somewhere and I hope it is ok: |

Here are the plans but they might change as I go. The wing span is 900mm/35".
The motor combo I use can be ordered here: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...9x6_Prop_Combo It is a 1600Kv motor with 25A max current, what is way more than needed. !!! I switched later to a 1000kv motor because of vibrations. See post #56 !!! This bird will also have something I always thought of putting into the Zero: Retracts (GWS micro to keep it light). But it can be built with fixed or no landing gear too. |

Wrench66,
cool, I guess the spotted camo is really the one everyone relates with the Ki-61. Yours looks very good. A not well known version, the "Ki-61F". I don't know yet, how I will do the actual paint job, maybe jus spotting the brush on it? Haven't thought about decals either. Hi Dreamcatcher, nice to see you again. Still like your Funtana and the Cap too. |

Thank you very much, Low Pass !
I appreciate the comments The Funtana still fly like a dream but i might have to rebuild a wing with another airfoil for the little Cap 232 : I wanted to test a modified version of the NACA 2414 airfoil but it does not work as well as planned : She's a bit nasty at low speed or when performing high G manoeuvers (she fly like a real Cap 232 ...), that's why i still haven't released the plan. I hope i will find a good solution to "quieten down the beast" (may be a good old Eppler 169 ? ) See you soon ! Pascal |

Since we are just at it. I tried the Eppler 339 for the Ki-61. It had enough curvature to fit in the wheels and fit best with the bottom lines of the fuse.
If I read it right it should also have good lift and not too much drag. It is not symmetrical like for aerobatic planes. But warbirds normally don't have them, they didn't have to fly inverted very often. We'll see how the profile works out. On my scratch built P-51 I didn't care for any profile and shaped it as I thought and it turned out ok. P-51s have to be flown fast, but since I had flaps there it can slow down well for landing. |

Hey Low Pass --Wow back at ya. Nice plans - You know I have a weakness for little green planes w/ red dots. Checked out you blog - that was some serious and super 3-d action w/ the SU-37. Nice Albatros too. You wouldn't happen to know anything about a RK-049 DF kit would you. I have had this little kit for like 20 yrs and lost the instructions. It's supposed to be nitro powered, but I'd like to make it electric. Thanks and oh yes thanks for sending Kansas your weather its been perfect here.

Hi prunner,
saw your Rufe thread, looks great, very nicely detailed and I like how you did the panel lines. Maybe I should try that too. It looks more real. The Su-37 gave me some grey hair. But in the end it was me or her and I won (I think). The 3d action was of course totally on purpose I don't know the RK-049 DF kit, just found this thread:https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=604154 and then someone mentioned it here http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=4239 in the review "First Impressions on 3' Fan". Actually a friend of mine got this 77mm EDF in his F-5 and sound and power are amazing. I'm not that long in this hobby, always wanted, but no time, no space... So I missed out on the whole gas powered part. Our weather is still nice, but the rain season will start soon |
