Meanwhile, I think I heard a bit of hushed mumbling from the 1st mate as she was simultaneously shoveling the driveway - Something about "those idiot boys and their toy boats....."

By the way, did you notice the French colors? Never can tell what them guys might try!
I am laughing myself into a pain in the side. However I must point out that if we HAD to live up there in the tundra, the first mate would insist on a rotary snow plow for the front of the John Deere instead of a number 9 grain scoop.

Now for the French colors--I know what you are up to. You are trying to lure the unsuspecting into range then taking their rigging down with your chain or grape shot.

Yes, your ruse was discovered, and with those new popguns, he has, you had better run.

Soulever au capitaine ou je vous accablerai de sarcasmes encore!

Lieutenant--he thinks we do not speak frog. Fire one across his bow and if he does not heave to--SINK HIM! We have the weather gauge and we have him by the hip.

Shipyard jingle for Surprise

It's eight bells
It's eight bells,
Captains on the way.
O what work needs be done before Syren's under way, eh?

It's first watch,
It's first watch,
Maintopmast has been raised,
O what carpenter has got done, Bosun will appraise.

Then the armory,
To the armory,
For new carronades,
To give Surprise another drubbing to start the new decade!

(Picture: Damage delivered by Surprise boarding attempt well under repair. Rigging and full re-armament under way shortly.)

What's in Store...

The effect of carronades firing round shot:

USS Niagara Live Fire Demonstration (1 min 44 sec)

They don't show the range involved and it doesn't say that grape was tried, though it looks like it was at some point.

A few points are left out of the demonstration (the one's Hollywood never takes into consideration);
The firing gun and target are not moving.
The target isn't shooting back.
The firer isn't trying to load and fire as quickly as he can, so his shots are more accurate than they would have been in actual circumstances - on the same note, he doesn't have the same combat experience a gunner of that time had.

None-the-less - it's a great demo of the effect of gun fire on the ships of the day and I though with the up-coming gunfight between Surprise and Syren - it was appropriate.

Nice pictures indeed..

Hope to be afloat this year with Brig 025...
Next step for me : painting the hull and then, assembling the masts..

Unfortunatly, I can't spend all the time I would like on my model, but, there are some progress..

I will try to keep you informed and post pictures asap.

best regards.

Ships Log 23 January 1810

Winds 8-10 SSE, barometer 29.8 steady, cloudy, temperature 52

A great day on the water today with sails reduced to a forecourse and mizzen top sail, driver, and stay sails. Even with the reduced canvas Surprise sailed faster than the Bass Baby could keep up at times.

I mounted the video camera on the gimble and sailed for about 5 minutes, rotating back and forth as well as up and down. I was getting some great footage for a You Tube--right? Wrong. I failed to turn the camera on. What a revoltin development that turned out to be.

Retired for now
Am I reading this right? There is a plan afoot to have a battle with two of these beautiful ships? Is this to be a real battle where the ships could sustain real damage? HOW CAN YOU?
All that work and then into actual combat? This is sacrilidge.
I don't believe it . I can't believe it. This isn't true is it? Pete

Norgale: The ships are more than safe. We do not use any sort of projectile and we are far enough apart than no damage will occur. The plan is to make a video of the action and have fun.

We are enjoying the ships too much to intentially damage any of them. RG

No matter what we do, it's safer and cheaper than R/C flying. I'm going on the fourth season of sailing - haven't crashed and burned yet - and Syren is in excellent shape with many years left in her. I just looked at an R/C WW1 plane and it would be over $1000 with brushless motor, LiPo's, etc etc. to get the finished model in the air. And the guys in the hobby shop said there are two kinds of pilots - those that have crashed expensive planes and I'm sticking with Syren.

Minnesota Yard Sail

Captain Chaos reckons that if they can have a YARD SAIL in Minnesota, we further south should be able to replicate it quite nicely--about once ever decade or so. We had to get out to take the photos today because the snow will be gone before the end of the week and you have to have a Yard Sail before all the good stuff is gone.
