Do a search in the EDF forum. Lots of good technical info to be found. And yes, an intake lip can make a big difference but it depends on many factors. Its just one piece of the puzzle.

Only pro's on my account.....

Used a WM400 on a Velocity-rc Slingjet.
First without intake lip.... very noisy and medium performance/power.
Then I made a lip from 3 layers of 3mm depron. Lenght: 2cm and sanded into a nice round shape.
Result: 30% more power and 50% less noise.
Feels like going from 3s to 4s lipo.....

Since then I have always used intake lip / ducting / exhaust cone

You generally don't need a lip on the EDF itself when it's mounted internally as long as the intake is rounded and smooth.

Lips for free mounted fans.... Ducts for internal mounting.
