It must be one hell of an area you fly in. I take my Quark for walks through the neighborhood where I live. I fly it a little ahead of me as I walk down the street. It attracts kids (and their dads) like crazy. I tell the kids to stay behind me and they do. On the rare occasions when I have to set it down more than 20 feet ahead of me, kids run to pick it up and are very careful handling it and bringing it to me. During these breaks in the flying, I answer questions from the dads; but the kids want to see more flying.

I spent most of the summer flying outside at a soccer field very early in the morning by myself. Every now and then someone would walk their dog. Even in that situation, I knew if I brought my bird down and Fido decided to run up, grab it and get smacked on the snout by a spinning rotor, it was my fault because I was in control of the bird. |

But that could have been just fine with me if it wasn't thrown in a hole where it would be almost impossible to retrieve. I had to control my anger during the time because he's just a kid. But I was ready to have the parent pay for it if they were not able to retrieve it back. |

This reminds me about a time I was flying a 2 meter sail plane and it got so far from me I couldnt tell if it was coming or going so, I just spiraled it to the ground. I was about a half mile away from where it went down For all I knew it could have been treed. By the time I got to the plane, some kids were huddled around it (Not that this was the kind of park alot of people played at, pretty much desolate place but i guess the kids saw it go down and ran to check it out. I was trying to hurry myself because I knew people do not leave well enough alone even if it isnt theirs. Id have to admit if I was walking along and saw a plane on the ground and no one around, i would be tempted to call dibs or at the least wait until someone showed up looking for it. (This is why we put our name and addresses and a phone number in our planes). In my case the kids I would assume had no clue who it belonged to or even didnt know how long its been sitting on the ground if they didnt see it go down. I went running up hollering "Hey thats my plane!!". They pretty much sat the plane down and walked off. probably 3-5 minutes later, I would have been minus one sailplane.

I've tried to fly in a park but to many people come and ask "how much does that thing cost" and living in Costa Rica you really don't want to draw much attention to yourself.
I know the parks in the US are much larger and safer then the ones here but a helicopter is just way to difficult to avoid a problem. Just think of the spool down of the blades and if a dog was chasing it because he thought it was a bird, and finally you have to land because either you are out of battery or fear the inevitable. I would be extremely pissed that the kid stole my helicopter and I might even track down their parents but from the sounds of your description they would have laughed at you and probably congratulated the kids for doing such a stand up job. Personally I wouldn't let any kid touch my helicopter, not even to bring it to me. Radio interfearence is way to un-predictable and an unexpected spool up would be horrible. Seriously the new mSR or 4G6 are great ways to have a TON of fun at home without having to go to the park to expose yourself to all these different variables. Honestly I bought a 4G6 to avoid that problem and I only fly my highly modded King 2 on the golf course at a local private country club after about 4:30 pm when no one else is on the course. |

After I got my heli back I would have thrown the kid down the drainhole! Then I would have pulled out my 9mm Baretta and shot any adult approaching me. Then I would go eat a hamburger before going home to repair my bird. LOL!
