Now that is a thing of beauty! Be sure to post when all those "details" are done. What a stunner!

Nothing much different except added removeable flaps for indoor flying Have since narrowed them by 1/4 in to same width as ailerons

Almost done....almost.

Weight is now 5 grams over stock....whoops I'm sure it has power to spare - especially with the E-flite 150mah pack.....gulp Who knew all those tiny details would add up Guess I have to fly at WOT....

Looks good anyway......

Outstanding! Did you use some type of "filler" on the foam, prior to painting it? Also, what did you use for paint? The plane is too pretty to fly, so keep it on display and go make another one to fly!!

Thanks for the kind words.

I did fill the foam quite a bit with normal household "spackling". I tried model lite filler but it's density is actually harder than foam - that equals really bad sanding. You end up sanding off more foam than filler which makes a mess of everything. Spackling on the other hand, sands super easy leaving the foam in place - just don't put on too much - only enough to fill the bigger voids.

For paint I intitially tried Testors new model master Latex - sucks. Pigment coverage is waaay too thin - it would take many coats to get a consitent colour overtop the other colours. If the base was pure white - it might be fine.

Instead I use Creative airbrush paint from Micheals. Thin with a touch of water and use multiple light coats - fully drying inbetween - coverage is excellent.

Flew her today - super tail heavy - but lots of power to spare. I'll make a new recessed battery holder in the nose and she should balance out fine. Pics to follow...

All stock except for the paint and wing fillets...which might add some speed...or not.

I'm going to hold off moving the batt till I'm sure it's a CofG issue. The stock elevator setup, even a full trim down, was still showing some up elevator. PLUS there is no downthrust built in the to the motor mount...which is a little odd. We have indoor flying tonight so I can trim it out without the wind interfering. If need be I'll add nose weight and see what happens.

BTW new batteries in my scale - 40grams with the battery!!!! Still flys fine....

Do you have the weight of the stock model for comparison?

My Un-flown, unmodified P-51 is 32.2g without battery.

The factory 120 mAh battery is 3.7g

So its 35.9g RTF

Got a whopping 4 flights before the motor burnt out...

Oh well - easy fix. New motor and gear box is under $20. Since I had to cut up the nose I decided to mount the battery internally - needed to be forward for CofG anyway. Cowl is held on with magnets - battery is removable once the cowl is off.

Hepdog,

Did you remove the original paint? or when you mention 'coverage' are you speaking of covering over the original colors.

Also. anyone know if Krylon Short Cuts will cover darks like on the P-51?

thanks all!
