Who's using what servo horn and control horn push rod positions for what surfaces?
I've currently got ailerons and rudders on outermost holes of both, elevator outermost control horn and third closest in servo horn. Still assembling it, haven't maidened yet (no hurry). GF and I took the day to fly other birds. |

Mine is set up for outermost holes on everything (both servo arm and control horn). Low rates are 50/50/70 (A/E/R) and high rates are 80/75/95. I set the high rates just below where there was servo binding. The roll rate isn't super fast, but still faster than scale.
Flew it at a warbird event in NJ yesterday and got a lot of positive comments. Surprising given the large number of giant scale gassers that were there. Huge inverted outside loops at 3/4 throttle....this thing just flies beautifully!! Mike C. |

Thanks!
This one's actually for my GF, who's a less experienced pilot than I. That's why I set the elevator less aggressive mechanically - my experience with other versions (from micro on up to this size) has shown me it's really responsive to elevator input and we don't want it flipping over into the ground just yet. I can move them later if need be. I have high and low rates at 100 and 70 (no expo - neither of us like the resolution "bump" that creates) across the board - I'm kind of old school that way. I do as much as possible mechanically before relying on the TX programming. I'm not getting any servo binding at 100, either. I put a Futaba GYA460 in it, too - like you said, gyros are nice to have (having flown without them in the past), and this one lets you choose from gyro+leveling (with 80 deg angle limits, so it's still really maneuverable but levels when you release the sticks), gyro only (no leveling - good for all flying), and pass-through/off where it's just you and the wind. (The last makes the hard-core old-schoolers happy. LOL) I have that set up with 50% gain on the ailerons and elevator, and 0% gain on the rudders. I do need to pick up a micro switch for the nose gear servo. We're not pulling the retracts out or disabling them - we have options to fly off of pavement as well as grass, and I know from personal experience that the largest cause of bent gear is poor landing technique (landing being the most difficult part of flying by most accounts, and I've bent the struts on my P-47 numerous times from not flaring correctly). The next largest cause is a soft/high friction landing surface. Speaking of, the nose gear strut should be vertical relative to the ground, not the fuselage. This bird sits on the ground with a nose-up attitude. So yes, when the fuselage is level, relative to the fuselage the nose strut should have a slight aft rake. Also, I noticed that the extra wire on the nose gear that opens the gear door is vertical relative to the fuselage/raked slightly forward relative to the ground. This is how ours is out of the box unflown. |

Wonders never cease...
I just put it in the CG machine @75mm aft of wing root fuselage center with a Hyperion HV 2400 battery all the way forward in the nose - and it sits just a couple degrees down at the nose like the manual says it should. *boggle* First time ever I haven't had to mess with weights or placements to balance a plane. |

Only one thing left to do before maiden - fit neodymium magnets into the drop tanks' mounts so we can remove them any time.
I read that some were using micro switches to disable the nose gear servo - those were not to be found for love or money locally, but the electronics shop did have DPST micro magnetic reed switches and neodymium magnets in stock. The magnets are round, so those went in the fuse and the reed switch is on the gear strut. Shuts the signal to the servo down perfectly. I would have preferred the magnet on the strut and the switch in the fuse, but I couldn't get bar/rod style magnets locally. |

Ready for maiden - with an escort.

Looking good - enjoy the maiden!
Funny thing - mine wasn't exactly *for* my GF, but she's been dropping subtle hints for more than year, like the Hallmark P-38 christmas ornament on a stand next to the TV I was going to get the FlightlineRC one, but I just can't bring myself to pay that much for a hunk of foam, no matter how nice a hunk it is... So yeah, the gyro was definitely for her- she's pretty good with a UMX Sport Cub with SAFE mode, but she'll need some extra assistance (and a buddy box) for the P-38. On the bright side, she went all artistic on the superchargers, so they look pretty realistic now :-) |

Really enjoy flying my P38. Here's a pic of my escort partner.
Damn Russians are in everything. Lol |

It was the sound of my P-38 twins that prompted the B-17 muti song. And it's a song when they all harmonize........ just before I drop the ordnance on my flying buddies. It's a super easy plane to fly, not unlike the P-38.
The Yak is by far the easiest to fly, and my absolute favorite EDF in the stable. I'd highly recommend it too. C.O., Noticed your avatar and I happen to have the discontinued, rare and incredibly beautiful Great Planes 60" Fokker D-r1 Tri-plane BNIB for sale if you want to chase off the Red Baron. |

Got pix? Also, balsa or foam, and fuel or electric?
It's my GF who would be interested. I'm after a Sopwith Camel myself. |

I took a hard look up in there at the mounting, and now I'm thinking of a block of foam glued into place to toughen up the shelves and then some CF rod through the block into the fuse walls for some more strength. That should be enough for my GF - while she's a less experienced pilot than I, I'll freely admit she has me beat at landings and greases them far more often than I do - or a large portion of our club membership as well. |
