It flew
It needed a ton of down, I guess I had put too much up in it. It flew well on an old TP 30c pack (I left the good one at home ). The nosegear is still giving me some problems, locking in in the "up" position and not coming down properly. I added a pin so it would rotate on the way up and rest sideways on the duct. I might have to switch to stronger wire struts on the landing gear, the flyfly struts are a bit weak and l/r sloppy. The right wheel came apart on takeoff Other than that it flew nicely, very smooth with a cool sound. I guess the max speed I got on the maiden, with all the trim work, was around 110 mph or so. 120mph level should be achievable. |

those fly fly struts suck, dont look right on a sabre anyhow then again im a purist. if it were me, id just go to wire legs wth coils in them. if seen a bunch of guys with fly fly struts that just bend to the side on landing. cheap chinese alum pot metal i guess. it did turn out very nice, probably the nicest fly fly sabre ive seen.

Looks fantastic Herb, glad it flew well. Did you move the CG ahead from the kit position? Seems to be a consistent advice from Jepe on these kits - LOL!

Thanks for the comments !
I had three flights with it, and it's getting a lot better as I get over the trim & landing gear issues. My CG is only 5mm ahead of the flyfly manual reccomendation, so I did not go as far forward as Jepe suggests. I hope to pick up some speed with new batts (the 1-yr old TP 3300 30C's 9S are getting a workout in the Sabre) and simple gear doors. I replaced the steel wire in the flyfly retracts with stronger piano wire, fixed a loose trailing link in the nose gear, and replaced the rear flyfly tires (one exploded on takeoff yesterday ) with some bigger kyosho ones. Yesterday on the second flight I landed without the right wheel, but tam's retracts held up pretty well . |

Happy New Year to you too
I would have used Springair 602's if I had a set lying around. I have four sets of those and they hold pressure for weeks if not a month ... But I had an extra unemployed Tam retract set I was sent by DS (by mistake or as a spare, did not ask ). In spite of all the checking on installation this tam set still leaks somewhere. I get air pressure for 5-10 mins which is a real frustration as you never know if you are going to land with the wheels down... I replaced the stock wheels, one exploded on takeoff . |

The problem with the wire struts is that I have several sets, and none of them fit ...
The tam set is 3mm, and comes with three pieces of chinese piano wire without even a coil. Now I haven't found yet a 3mm wire with a decent coil (robart?) ... And making your own coil sounds like a lot of fun The very nice Springair struts I have are of course coiled, but are 3.125 mm (1/8 '') so they don't fit. The last option is to drill them out to whatever the bigger struts are (possibly 5/32'')... . |

Batterywise a have a couple of new sets, 40C 3000's. I wish they would settle on a choice of connector.
The old TP 30C 3300's have held up rather well (8-10 months, 50+ flights) but they'r done, while the TP 30C 5000's have been miserable (done after 15 flights or so) The ones below I now get from "my own special factory" in china . |

Drill, 'em out for the largest dia you have herb, the bit self guides through the hole and it really is simple. As for those batts, they're really pretty good. I buy the "yellow" ones from that special factory and have found them to be pretty darn good.
Best wishes and Happy New Year Mark- |

How long do the struts need to be Herb? BVM sells the best wire struts, 5/32" or 3/16" with 1 coil. If they are TAM retracts like mine the 5/32" wire fits. The struts are 7.25" overall length, 5.75 from the top of the coil down to the end, the coil is about a 1/2" diameter. Their axles (a set screw but I always sloder them on) are also EXCELLENT. I use these on 13.5 pound jets and unless you really smash it into the ground they don't take a permanent set, well other than a miniscule "first use" set.

Well these are the "old" tam retracts, so they are drilled out at just 3mm (see the straight wires that came with them in the picture above, left side).
The new ones Tam sells now are exactly the same mechanics, except he now enlarges them to 5/32 (3.9mm), and I have these newer ones in the tam F-16. I was hoping to avoid drilling out the ones I have in the F-86 - which would require to take them out of the wing In the meantime though I have flown the F-86 two more times with the stock LG and the fatter Kyosho wheels, and it seems to work well . The F-86 weighs only 8.1 lbs rtf, and lands like a glider, so this setup might actually work for a while. Of course if you slam it on landing it won't. I have to look at the BVM struts for the Tam F-16 though, I have constant issues with that flimsy nosegear mount, getting quite frustrated. |

Took a couple of pictures at the field on Thursday, finally two good flights w/o lg issues ...
Now I have to find the small leak in the air system, I think it's the fill valve and I don't have another one around (unless I take the SA one out of the Rafale). Happy New Year to all Off to our Costa Mesa JetDay ... . |

Hmm, for the flimsy nose gear mount maybe you need an even softer nose strut. Thinner wire and / or more turns in the coil. The BVM wire won't help there.
