2009 3DHS Wish List

If you had $600 -700 to spend at 3DHS what would you do? Buy two small planes or buy the biggest one you can for the money? Keep in mind, this includes the purchase of all items to get the plane(s) up and running.

Please share your thoughts!

Thanks!

..and how windy are the conditions where you fly, that's important.

Though I have to say, the 42" Slick and the 40" Edge make an unbeatable pair that covers all the bases.

By the time you buy a good radio and some lipos, there's only enough money left for a 47" plane. I'de go with the Edge 540, Torque 2818 motor, Airboss 45 ESC and Thunder Power 4s 2600 Pro Lite batteries, four Hi Tech HS65MG servos and a Futaba 7G radio. That ought to eat up the better part of $700.

Funny you would put it that way because I think they are a pair, I consider those my 40" "Team."

Without a transmitter, it would be enough to outfit a Slick or a 47". A small Edge/Slick pair would exceed that budget.

I know you do, and I completely agree with you. They are very complimentary. Very different, but both great.

As great as the Slick is, I do not think that it is the right plane for everybody. There is still plenty of room for the Edge, SHP and Velox, and maybe even a PA plane.

I would buy the biggest plane I can for the money. The rule of thumb that bigger flies better is true. Additionally, if you don't already have electronics to put into the plane from other projects then $600 - $700 will only get one airplane no matter which size you pick.

$130 to $300 for the airframe
up to $100 for a receiver
around $130 for a motor and ESC
up to $100 for servos
a couple of batteries then misc props, extensions etc gets you right up close to your budget limit. Even if you go smaller and you have 100 or 200 left over then you don't have enough for all of the gear that goes into the second plane.

But in any case, bigger will give you:
  • more pentrating power into the wind
  • an easier time seeing precisely the plane's orientation when it is a hundred yards away from you
  • more time to think about maneuvers, ... i.e. was that 5 rotations or 4
  • A bigger wow factor ... every time I tell co-workers about my planes they say wow louder for the bigger ones
  • cooler photos when it is hovering next to you

This is true....but he ask "If you had $600 -700 to spend at 3DHS what would you do?" And that's what I'd do.

+1
My son-in-law has a bit of $$$ burning a hole in his pocket and asking me the same thing.
He's looking at T-rex's or finishing the builds on 2 3DHS planes that I've sold him.

The question is, What gear do you already have?
Transmitter? Chargers? Lipo's?

George
