If this is good information and Deputy did not have Floaters in his eyes then, this will be very SAD for the entire family and I do not think DAD will ever be the same.

Really sad way to lose a child by a freak accident from a device the Dad built himself.

One reason I might doubt the deputy's story, is that if a 60 lb weight was detached from the balloon, it would experience a pretty sharp ascent rate and be a lot higher in altitude in a very short time.

Was that balloon even big enough to lift a 6 year old kid ? It looks smaller than the bunch of balloons the Mythbusters had to assemble to lift that little girl...

I pray that is the case.

Wouldn't it be pretty simple to find the lifting capacity of the balloon and find out if it was big enough to carry a six year old? Seems to me that would be the place to start.

quick math (off the top of myhead)

60 pounds would take a box 65 feet by 65 feet by 65 feet (wrong)

960 cubic feet of gas and a weightless bag..

That saucer is too small by a factor of at least ten..
it is a hoax

quick math is not a good idea for expensive projects..

The balloon needs to be about three times bigger that that saucer was

not ten

Even if the balloon could not directly "lift" the boy it could have become lite enough for the wind to do it.
I hope and pray that this is just a hoax or the kid is scared and hiding somehwhere so he doesn't get paddled for losing dad's balloon.

Thanks, that is what I was driving at. It seems to me that the builder would have the dimensions and would know how heavy the boy was, and if the thing was big enough to lift him. It seems that would be the place to start.
