Question

Which Variometer to buy?

Hello, I'm back in RC gliders after 25 years and need to get up to speed on which Variometer to purchase for my 2.5M Art Hobby motorglider. I don't really want any data logging, or anything fancy, JUST A VARIOIMETER if possible. Everything I've seen online seems to not really be available in the United States.... Thanks

Anyone have a lot of time on both? How about a functional comparison of both systems and especially comparison of TEC.

Is one more pleasant to listen to than the other?

TEC performance is primarily based on the installation and adjustment of the probe.

I have probably 100 hours on the picolario and 5 on the Sky Melody. Both were usable and could be configured to whatever style reporting you like. TEC is something you make at the house with 1/8" Al tube and assorted fuel tubing.

Mesa AZ, it's a dry heat!

Varios

Many years ago a company caller Soaring Product produced a Vario which worked on 49Mhz. The rights were later bought by Ace R/C, which alas is now defunct. If you can find one used (I have one but it is NOT for sale!), it should be much cheaper than the current offerings, but you will not get all the "bells and whistles", just a Vario that works. Multiplex also used to produce one which announced the height in German, but they are also no longer made.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You might well read this thread. The issue is definitely not resolved.

I love my WSTECH vario;

http://www.wstech.de/english/index_e.htm

The function I use 99% of the time is where it reports the altitude gain or loss over the last 20 seconds. So if I'm doing good, I here "plus 40", which means in the last 20 seconds, I have gained 40', it's kinda like a "trend" report. When it's not reporting this, it acts like a typical vario with tones for ascending or descending. Also, with a flip of my tx switch I can switch between different modes/transmitting functions of the vario.

The frequency that it transmits on might be an issue as I think its on the ham radio frequencies here in North America.

I spent the past weekend at the Cumberland Soar For Fun flying my 5M Nimbus with the PitLab Sky Assistant. I can vouch for the fact that it's a very good product. Mike at Little Soaring Fleet is a US dealer. zbigniew (DOT) michalczyk@verizon (DOT) net. I have both a Picolario and the PitLab, I like the PitLab better.

I do have a spare ACE Thermic Sniffler in excellent condition, in the original packaging. I'm not using it. Let me know if you have any interest.

Steve,

Are you using a TEK probe with your Pitlab? I've been on the fence to buy one of these and still wondering what the best choice is (with or without TEK).

Thanks,

Jim

For European fliers, I sell the Pitlab Sky Assistant, and the new WsTech DataVario. They are both very good products.

Thanks for the bandwidth.
