After what i learned , i think the 500 is the best bet for a beginner . You can get them almost the same price as a 450 pro ( around 70.00) and all the electronics , not including a good radio are almost the same price . I think between the 3 , 250 , 450 , 500 , the price difference RTF is 40 to 50 dollars at best .

Bigger is definitely easier to learn on, just make sure to have someone who knows check your setup, or you'll end up like this guy!

2nd tip - you need to replace bare minimum with align parts: 1. tail gear mount & tail gear. The gear is weak and the bearings are no good 2. Feathering shaft (The HK250 one will explode with high headspeed) 3. Get kevlar (super!) belt not align replacement or the hk250 standard 4. plastic blades are ok for practice but the carbons are better (also plastic causes less damage if you hit stuff!) 5. Get an align canopy (SE ones have more space than a normal 250 canopy) 6. Dont be a cheapskate with the tail servo it needs to be fast and digital otherwise you will be the next moaner on these forums re: tail holding.. which will be entirely your own fault. the rest is all the fault of the idiot that set it up... 7. Make sure the kv / pinion / gearing is right and your max headspeed will be aroung 4500 Find your local or an online align supplier in your country (in uk www.align-trex.co.uk are good and fast to deliver) |

Nice! At first I thought he was going for hard 3D in a tight space ala Nick Maxwell! Then I realized he just wanted to trim some trees. |

Best upgrade I got was the FBL head and zyx FBL controller. This transformed mine. Mine is stock apart from the head, I agree with the comments on the tail servo, that helps no end. Having said that I have a HK 9 gram cheapo digital and it works fine, but I know a better servo will perform better on the tail. I have yet to have a failure on the stock parts, and the feathering shaft and tail belt are doing fine, with the tail belt get some silicon oil on it and do not pull too much tension on it, seems to work for me. Good luck with yours I really like mine. |

ok no, no maiden flight on wednesday. I ended up spending a couple hours troubleshooting why the gyro wouldn't init properly. turns out, somewhere in the dx7, my gear switch was misconfigured.
added: yay, got everything dialed in. I could only get a maximum of +6 deg out of the blades due to the fact the servo horn hits the anti-rotation bracket, but I think it'll be fine. gonna try out a quick little hover tomorrow. wish me luck. |

Go to here and download the trex 250 manual. http://ms.align.com.tw/mpeg/manuals/...ers/250Kit.pdf. Its pretty much the same, but there a few minor differences, the kit is mostly assembled for you, you now need to get a good set of torx micro drivers, for fitting the screw set. Take a component part, say the head, then refer to the manual for its exploded diagram. slowly and with the aid of a digital camera take photos of the your disassembly, take notes and amend the manual if you find any glaring differences from the manual to your component part. Re Assemble using any greases or weak loctight that is shown on the diagram. For metal to metal I used loctite 222, purple anything stronger and your in for a real treat when you try to repair it. Metal to plastic no loctite, but some people seem to like ca here, i don't unless i get problems. Use this method to go through all the assembled parts, then assemble the heli as per the manual Particular parts of interest for me were: Head, grease the dampers and the feathering spindle tri flow, loctite the feathering shaft loctite 222. check for free movement and no slop, shim head bearings if necessary. One way bearing and mainshaft shim, when assembled this should work freely. I had to take a small amount off the one way bearing shim till it worked well. The rest went well but it tried my patience a bit due to the overall size. If you have the FBL head then i used the align manual for the standard flybarred head and also the flybarless one as the hk one seemed to be between the two. I originally only bought it as i wanted to see if the cheapest heli on the market could be turned into a flying machine without changing anything from stock. I got it at a discount price and had a month of evenings playing with it for $19.99, cheap entertainment in my book. The heli flys well for the money and flies better now it has FBL head and zyx controller, By the way the nanotechs from HK fit well. |
