Building RC Helicopter from Scratch


Just from reading online, it looks like unless we're ready to do some heavy machining, we're going to have to go with a fixed-pitch rotor control system.

One of the guys in my group says that we can do a full-range one, but we don't have proper access to machining for the swashplate.

What do you guys think?

Well, you buy in bearings, right? The swash is just a complicated and hard-to-machine bearing. I think a heli still counts as built from scratch if you buy a swash or swash core.

If you make it flybarless the head will be much simpler.

If you have a lathe that can turn about 50mm (2") diameter alu, you can do a swashplate. Keep it standard size though, so if you fai you can anyway uy one.
Of course, you have to buy the large diameter bearing, but I don't think you aspire to machine your own bearings anyway.

How about using the Himaxx CR 2805 counter rotating motor and making a simple coaxial?

UPDATE!

We decided to just buy a rotor assembly:





The battery we ordered was defective so we can't run any serious tests, but I did get to test the servo-rotor function before it ran out of juice and seems to be working fine.

I requested an RMA for the battery a different another one at the same time.

Anyway, that one is made out of carbon fiber, pvc, and pcb.

We decided to go with a standard 120 degree ccpm system, but 4 blade. We're going to use a KDS Flymentor to compensate for the absent flybar. Also, we're using a seperate gyro for a tail motor. We decided against the belt system to save time and make it simpler.

We actually got the advice about the tail motor from a connection we have at Sikorsky; the people who make the real life Black Hawk. We described to them our plan to go flybarless and they think its totally feasible.

Well yeah - considering it's been done like, a bazillion times, I think my dog would agree it's "totally feasible" - but does it address your specific need?

Would make a good frame for a scale project I think. Flybarless heads are almost required if you want that scale look.

I haven't searched through all your posts. What are you trying to accomplish?
Some type of project or experiment since "it just has to fly"?

I'd be worried about the way the main shaft is mounted to the "frame" for any type of durability. Maybe gusset it to the frame and use those as servo mounts(?).

I was actually thinking about that. Carbon fiber braces at 60 degree angles from the back center line of the tube. Kinda busy, so I'm not touching it again till like Tuesday...

if you think of the flymentor better get the real thing ; the capton helicommand (of wich the flymentor is a copy)
I have 3 and am verry happy with the suport capton has provided.

I didn't realize the Flymentor wasn't the real deal. I've had it for like 2 weeks now but haven't gotten a chance to try it.

Well it does have to land as well

Does the landing gear really need those end curves that I usually see?
