Build Log

Prop in slot Saab Draken - Plans (6mmFlyRC)

So, I’ve been working on this design for a 6mm Depron, profile, prop in slot Saab Draken.

Depron Draken (2 min 12 sec)

This jet is designed in the size and style of build that I like.

The dimensions are:

Span: 26” (660mm)
Length: 40.5” (1029mm)
Flying weight with 2200mah battery: 17.75oz (503g)

Motor: 2212-06 (2200kv)
Prop: APC 6x4E

6mm depron.

2 Servos on the elevons only.

It should be an easy build so I’m hoping to have the prototype flying by the end of the weekend. If there is any interest, I’ll post plans once any snags are sorted out.

***Update***
Plans added
CG position 0.5" (13mm) in front of wing break.

****Update 2****
Tiled plans in post #14
Build pictures from post #21

*****Update 3*****
Optional underwing pylons shown in post #54

******Update 4******
Video: post #100 & #121

*******Update 5*******
This jet is available as a kit from www.6mmflyrc.com.

********Update 6********
A 17" span version is available from www.nicohobbies.com, where there is also an excellent build guide from crxmanpat as a free download.

Enjoy!
Marcel

This is very cool and adds a little dimension to the plane. I'd be interested in doing one if it works out.

And of course you've made it for my preferred power plant.

Thanks for the comments.

The Draken went together quite easily. Maiden flight tomorrow morning, hold thumbs!

Jets are for kids-of all ages
I have always liked the Drakken. It was my first plastic airplane model as a kid. I would like to have plans in .dwg if possible, or any other way. I also would like to know. All up weight, size of battery you are using and c.g. location.

Thanks

Looks good Marcel. Good luck on the maiden!

If it works out, I'd definitely like a set of the plans to try one for myself.

Well, I had two very successful flights this morning and it looks like this thing will be a lot of fun!

As could be expected, it rolls like a drill and seems to be capable of extremely high angles of attack.

The prototype weighs 16.75 ounces (475g) ready to fly but without paint, using a 2200mah battery.

I had the CG at 1 (25mm) in front of the wing break, which seems to be a good stable position.

Plans and build pics will be up soon.

Thanks for the interest.

Marcel,

Congrats on the maiden flights! I would say the weight added by paint will be negligible, maybe get you to 17oz total if that.

Looking forward to seeing plans so I can try one myself.

Thanks Pat,

I have added plans in A0 format to the first post. I'd be grateful if someone could tile them to A4 and Letter size.

Tiled for Letter and A4 at your request.

Now, if there were any way to make it sound like a real one
A Draken doing a low pass during a show was one of the high points of life when I was a kid.

Those "intakes" look pretty good for such a simple design. That is always the spot I complain about when I see a Draken model....
