Gary,

others with more expertise can chime in, but the only field available for a major contest in the Phoenix area is Schnepf Farms. An important ingredient are porta-potties or other facilities. Can't hold an AZ Open at the dirt field or Chandler/Elliot Bowls.

Gary,
I believe they are going to the Surprise field which is on Litchfield road, about 1/2 way between Greenway & Thunderbird Roads

That's cool, because it's farther inland, and only 5h from Phoenix.

But now, three cheers to Doug Montgomery's indestructable Orion DLG!

At today's SAGE Christmas party, hosted by Dave Rosenthal (Thanks!), Dave Nutter's Orion somehow managed to find itself under the rear wheel of a Minivan, which proceeded to roll over the wing and fuselage, somehow missing the tailfeathers, accompanied by several loud crunches. I was flying not too far away, while Dave was rolling up a bungee cord, and the sounds were truly dreadful. Doug made a few quick repairs, and the Orion flew like before, maybe even better. Don't try that at home!

Hmmm. Well, I do have a CD license and have been running hlg contests in Olympia.

Lots of hlg flyers in this area, but my perception is that most don't belong to a club. Is that correct?

Clubs, in my opinion, are good things for glider flyers. With clubs come dues, with dues comes money to lease fields for contests, the ability to sanction them (insurance), and more important,, money for porta potti's. If only a field exists, then the contest entries could pay for porta potti's.

Just my thoughts.

Charles,

Weather report shows pretty windy tomorrow, so I guess I wont be driving down to Surprise.

That should insure that conditions are really great.

i think we will be at the suprise field tomorrow for a while . as for the az open there were date issues with swc so dave made the decision to cancel the az open the suprise field is plenty big enough for a dlg contest .so is the elliot bowl. so you dont have to saction the contest if your not a cd just put on the contest. john

Gary,

conditions on the 24th should be OK, but I can't make it. Family time. Hope to make it to Ian's clinic on 12/28.

Cheers, Charles

Norm,

I'd like to fly some DLG on New Year's day, but have to work around family activities. I'll PM you on Monday. The guys up north are having a TD postal contest the same day, but I don't do TD.
