CropdusterBob, bought a new plane today. It was the Long-EZ from Dangerbirds collection. After tomorrow, I'll have another $75 for George for Sweden.

Thanks, Bob. Thanks, Dangerbird!

Undercambered Airfoils

Hey George,

I've attached a picture and PDF of the Zone V2 root airfoil, and the undercamber is very evident.

Name: P1010832.JPG
Views: 140
Size: 87.1 KB
Description:

Zone-V2-60 151

Compared to my other DLGs, it climbs much better. I'll bring it on Wednesday and you can give it a heave - your feedback is much appreciated. Maybe you can ask Roland to compare it to the Concept's foils.

I know next to nothing about aerodynamics, but here is my assumption:

The Concept "needs" reflex to really get scooting. This leads me to believe that it also has an undercambered airfoil.

Right on - George mentioned last Saturday that some folks think a DLG with an undercambered airfoil can't launch, and I think he's proving the opposite. The Concept wing definitely has negative curvature on the bottom. Reflex configures the foil for minimum drag at 0 angle of attack. A symmetrical foil would be nice for climb, and reflex provides the closest approximation.

I'd like George to fly my Zone V2 and play with launch settings - camber, reflex, whatever. Based on his experience with the Concept, I bet he'll have it optimized very quickly. George has the advantage that he can launch with either hand. Or is that either arm?

Undercamber is a misnomer, that's why I called it curvature. There's just one camber in an airfoil, and that's determined by how much thickness lies above and below a line drawn between the center of the nose radius and the leading edge. Plot points midway between top and bottom surfaces, connect them, and that's your camber line. Undercamber is just a visual feature, and relatively meaningless. Doesn't mean that it's not important or desirable, but in itself it's not a means of qualifying an airfoil.

CASL Flying

Flying at the CASL field today around 6:30 am with Hohokam. Plan to be there on Thursday and Friday same time with Alan C.

Wednesday 4 pm at the Bowl.

You're all encouraged to offer advice on how to improve my launch mechanics and plane settings - anytime, anywhere, in public. Show no mercy.

Ok...no mercy.............
The problem is Charles....will you actually listen??!!!!!!! You ask for advice,,and pretty much do the opposite of what anyone tells you to do.
For example..one of your dlgs had absolutely no expo on the flaperons. I recommended using expo..your response was that expo was not needed.
-You wanted your plane to launch straight but were extremely stubborn
about trimming the plane to make it launch straight because the Flaperons
would not look even. If you ask for help..and really don't want help....what is your agenda???..and be honest about it..
This is a warning to my fellow dlg pilots....if Charles asks for help...do not get sucked into helping him....it will be the most frustrating thing you have ever experienced!!! I am sure other pilots in the groups feel the same way.
Other then that..Charles..is a super guy to fly with and a darn nice guy!!

Dave I realize you tried very hard to sandwich the bad between the good. But I just don't see enough bread to make this sandwich
