Burt Rutan Space Vehicle - Unveiled Yesterday!

I just read an article regarding a Space Vehicle designed by Burt Rutan. The Jet delivery portion of the Vehicle was test flown yesterday very succesfully. The "orbiter" actually will not orbit but go to 52 miles altitude & back was also shown & ground display of motors shown.
The main thing about Rutan's design is SIMPLICITY! Instead of the "Cannonball" type re-entry that the Space Shuttle uses, his will be much slower (like Mach 3.1) & the high drag design of the tail will naturally help to slow the craft down on Re-Entry. His design also gives the craft a WIDER re-entry angle than the Space Shuttle has so will be pretty easy to bring back in what he calls a "Carefree" landing.
The Spacecraft portion will be test glided over the Mohave desert over the next couple of months. The Orbiter is designed for (3) people but most likely only (1) may go for the first few flights.
The Jet will take the "Orbiter" up to 50,000 feet & release it there for it's trip above 50 Miles (Anythiing over 50 Miles makes you an Astronaut according to Nasa).
This is a TOTALLY Private venture, no taxpayer money was used so get your wallet ready for a ticket!
The Military is very Intrigued by this & says they may use the Rutan system to deliver "Micro" Satellites into orbit. How much are we spending on NASA? Anybody else read this article?

Its an X-Prize vehicle.
Just what we need, having some private companies give space flight a go, as NASA is not much good any more. The private sector will allow for far more innovation etc.

One X-Prize attempt I follow is:

They have John Carmack (programmer for games such as Doom and Quake) as their main funder and code programmer. Lots of media to watch - videos of flight attempts etc. Very interesting read.

ABOUT %$#@ TIME!

I've kinda had a suspicion for some time that 'ol Burt might be up to something like this...

Private industry should have been doing this for years (since the Moon landings).

Holiday Inn would have a dome in one of the Mares and a station at one of the Lagrange points by now...

I like Wired Magazine. Lots of cutting edge stuff. Cheap too.
