The faster the wind blows, the straighter and more horizontally the wind extends. As per FAA standards a 15-knot (28 km/h; 17 mph) wind will fully extend the properly functioning windsock. A 3-knot (5.6 km/h; 3.5 mph) breeze will cause the properly functioning windsock to orient itself according to the wind.

The stripes are actually useful:

The first stripe indicates a 3-knot breeze
(The wind sock has turned and aligned with the wind - usually you should look for an anemometer near the wind sock to determine if there's any appreciable wind because often the first segment is held open by the frame.)
The second stripe is ~ 6 knots
The third stripe is ~ 9 knots
The fourth stripe is ~ 12 knots
The last stripe is 15 knots or higher
If the windsock is missing you probably shouldn't be at the airport.
If the pole is missing you're probably on your way to Oz.

Hi Big Stik, from being out at the field many times, when the sock is almost straight out it's about 10 mph wind. When it's about half way out it's about 5 mph wind. That's about as close as I can say. Hope that helps you.

Yes that does help. I've been sort of doing the same thing. I can't get back to flying yet so I've been going out to watch the sock and check my weather app for wind speed. I've been guessing the sock is a 10 -15 mph sock. Once I get my Big Stik built I'll worry less about the wind.

Sunny and low winds tomorrow morning. Dress warm, get in a couple flights, and go for breakfast! It don’t get no better than that!

Hey everyone I'm not a frequent kieselburg flyer though I have been there quite a bit in the past. I was cruising the forums and found this page so I thought I'd say what's up. I'm down by county line and state line roads and usually just fly over the fields around me and in front of my house. Maybe I'll have to get a card and cruise out sometime. I know sometimes my buddy jon flys out there on Tuesday night's but didn't realize how many others did. Well glad I stumbled in here and hope to see ya all there sometime. God bless Brett

Morning of 12/14/17

Well there were a couple brave souls this morning. At 8:30 am it was 15* , 6 mph wind, and a chill factor of 13*, a bit nippy, but a good day to fly.

Sat Jan 6 Harlem Indoor Fly

The next Harlem Indoor Fly is Sat Jan 6, 6-9pm

Rock Valley RC Flyers Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/196919876292/
815FPV Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/815FPV/

It’s that time of year to start thinking about the Harlem Indoor Fly, and getting your foamie, heli, or multirotor gear in order.

For those of you who made the Harlem Indoor Fly last year, you know that the heating, lighting, parking, bathrooms, quiet inside, no air currents, etc were all advantages of the Harlem indoor facility. Hoping you can make it again this year, or if you’re new to indoor flying or the Harlem facility, you will not be disappointed!

815FPV will have an Inductrix tiny whoop class fun fly course set up on the north end. This is a multirotor FPV course for fun fly and practice use. Video is limited to 25mw.

The Harlem Indoor Fly dates are Saturdays from 6-9pm:
Dec 16, Jan 6 & 20, Feb 3 & 17, and Mar 3.

Harlem Indoor Fly pilot passes can be purchased at Hobby Town.
The advance purchase 6-pack is $70.00, the 3-pack is $45.00, and Walk-ins are $20. One punch per pilot, so you can share your pass with a friend.

• Youth pilots can fly for FREE, when accompanied by a paid dome fly adult pilot. So come on out and have a great time with your kids or grandkids, and get them involved in aviation and a great hobby.

• Youth pilots must be AMA registered, which is also FREE. Please see the AMA web link below.
http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/youth.aspx

The Harlem Indoor Fly Flyer is attached.
