Ritewing Zephyr FPV build thread

For my 1st FPV platform Ive decided to go with the Zephyr.
This one is slightly cut down with a total ws of 54" and a little extra sweep to the wing. I was told by Chris at Ritewing that it will be alot easier to balance in this size and shape but still float and create lots of lift.

Power:
Battery is one 11.1v 5000mah Thunder Power Pro-Lite lipo
Motor (so far) is Rimfire 35-36-1200
ESC is Electrifly 45-SS Silver Series 45amp
Servos TBD

Video:
RV 900-500 transmitter
DX201 w/ case
Tilt/pan TBD
GPS/OSD TBD (either Range Video or Eagle Tree)

I decided to build this wing with flaps for controlled decents, short landings, and decent slow flight characteristics.
Heres a few pics of the initial build with my intended layout.
Please let me know your opinions.
Matt

Nice build there! I'm not an expert in aerodynamic, I'm confuse on how the flap/spoiler will work on flying/delta wing? Do u intend to use it just like the concept of speed brakes i.e. flap up elevons down?

Ive been talking with Chris at ritewing and he said that there are wings with flaps, so Im guessing it will work.
I can also employ mixing with all four surfaces such as butterfly mixing or crow mixing. That makes the elevons go up and the flaps go down. the result is a very stable plane with extreme drag and slow flight abilities.

webdr,
Looks nice, I like the idea of flaps and also the cover on your tx, just one thing though, are you gonna embed the wires into the foam or tape them onto the surface of the wing ??

Pretty small flaps for the wing size. Could you just program flaps into the elevon function simular to what is accomplished with flaperons?

The video Tx gets hot during use so you may want to provide some ventilation.

Not unless you want to be thrown into the ground nose first

The foam looks pretty rough. Does that make it draggy?

Ya could be since they are on the trailing edge but wouldn't that be the same problem with separate flaps. Never mind I see you plan to link them.

Sure it does but not any more then the batteries, wires, transmitters ECT sticking out .

All wires will be imbedded.

Also, after some good advice, I moved the flap servos forward infront of the spar and slid the elevon servos forward a bit. Pics to come...

And yes I will cut scoops for all electronics that heat up.
The wing will be fiberglassed, then covered in monocoat. it wont look rough.

No not the same problem with flaps because you still have the ellevons to keep positive pitch. Flying wings do not fly slow unless you either have flaps or you fly at a ridiculous angle of attack. I guess if your wing loading is nice and low you could also fly slow. Does not tend to be our case when we stuff lots of MAh on the bird for extended flight times.

Mum is the word!
Hi guys ,The Zephyr's foam is a 1.5 grade when the maxi only uses 1.3,the 1.5 makes it more rigid with verry little added weight.
The 1.5 requires more heat to cut and has a little more of a plastic feel to it.

I like this foam better ,it cuts more true than the 1.3 and it is way more durable, the finish is a tad rougher,it makes the glass stick better.
It makes your wing more than just a disposable plane when built rite.

I got the servos moved to better suit the center of gravity.
Test fit a few items.
The motor mount is glued in and I turned the outrunner around like it should be

awesome. thanks a lot for doing this. I haven't gotten around to even starting mine yet, work is killing me. I'll follow your lead on this one, I guess

by the way ... the battery cover says 3200mAh and your description says 5000mAh ... which one is it?
