40A Cap 232 Stevens AeroModel

The final tooling work is done for the molded parts and the laser files have been scrubbed one more time. I think we are ready to begin beta by the end of the month. After two evenings of work this is what you end up with.

For those of you not familiar with the project here are the specs:

55" Wing Span
50" Length
550 Squares of Wing area

Just add water and..... (Whatever you do don't feed this model after midnight).

The target weight for the covered airframe with linkages - all hardware pull/pull etc.... minus radio gear, motor, esc, battery is 20oz.

What you see here framed model and all plastic bits - tips the scales at 11.5oz or 12.75oz with built up balsa wheel pants (not pictured). Still have to add the gear legs (wire) - skin it (solite, ultracote lite, etc) wheels and pull/pull linkages... but I think the 20oz mark is well within reach.

I have the motor as well... an Axi 2820-10, and a whole mess of radio equipment just begging for a new home! Did I mention 10 cell packs in need of a workout as well?

Don't worry Mitch, I'll let you fly mine (once)...

Besides I only have 50 planes.

Looks great.

So what is the expected recommended power system?

The plane will support the GD-600, MEC, and In-line Maxxon gearboxes... Should be a good match for your typical 10 cell setups drawing at or under 40A. The Endo, Hacker C40, Hacker B40 in geared combos all come to mind. I will be testing the performance of the AXI in the bird - these larger direct drive outrunners would seem to be a good match for sport / pattern flying. The firewall mounting system will be somewhat modular and will allow me to build in support for other motor / gearbox combos in the future.

Looks fantastic! Put me in line as well. You can put me between Mitch and Sal, I'll keep them from fighting in line. :-).

All: I purchased the power system for the CAP 40A about a month ago. I went with the Mega 22/20/2 with a MEC superbox geared 4.6:1, swinging a 15x8 prop. I hope that works, I'll know as soon as I can get my hands on the cap.

Finally, a 40 sized Cap that won't weight 6 1/2lbs filled with ply thick enough you can land an F-18 on. Thank you. This will definitely be my next kit. So the time it's available I should have the table clear of current projects.

Will the motor mounts be predrilled to accept MEC gearboxes.

Any chance you'll have these for sale or demo at SEFF?

I hope to have kits ready for SEFF as everything is in-place to begin production once the beta stage is complete.

As far as the motor mount is concerned there I am tring to make it as modular as possible with each mount laser cut to accomodate the specific requirements of each gearbox.

I will probably be flying mine with an AXI 2820-10 to start then moving on to a Hacker B40-10S 4.4:1
