45cc delta wing rebuild

Well, I am rebuilding my coroplast delta wing. This is what it used to look like:

This is what it looked like when I opened the plane up. It is amazing how busted up on the inside it was:

Here are the bones of the new one:

it sort of leaves one speechless as to how much was left to keep the wings from folding up. amazing. Tough stuff that coroplast is.
Looks like it will have a lot less flexing now.
Nice plane.

You were lucky, around here, we only had small politcal signs. They didn't have any big ones for me to snag. Either that or someone beat me to them.

Ha, you misunderstand, the damage was done by the impact, not a failure in the air. No way that thing could have flown if the spars were broken.

I was curious as to if you got your new delta flying or not.
About where did you set the CG for it? Did you use the entire 4x8 foot sheet of coroplast for it?

I got lucky and snagged a few big 4x8 foot sheets after our local primaries this year. So I am trying to decide what to build with them. I happen to have a magneto 25cc and a 32 cc RC gasoline engine I could use on one of these maybe. The 25cc is cool as it has crankcase mounting lugs like a regular glow engine has.

Ya, the delta flys and it is a full 4x8 sheet, so I have 16 square feet of wing area. Iirc, the cg is at 18" from the nose of the plane, but I will double check when I go out to the garage.

And if your's comes out anywhere near as heavy as mine, I suspect 32cc may not be enough to do much more than fly in a circle. My 45 labors hard to pull it.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
I do have a 50cc engine with CDI ignition, I just sort of like the magneto ignition, even if it weighs more, for its simplicity.

25 to 30 pounds, never have weighed it. It does float like a dream though.

It is looking nice. Did you use elevons or elevator/aileron setup for the control surfaces?
I can see separating the control surfaces to help control unwanted flexing but still use elevons.

Yes it uses elevons. I wanted to use 4 servos for some redundancy.

Hot glue on the lower half and gorilla glue on the upper.

Yeah the redundancy is a great idea. Also splitting up the control surfaces like that reduces the flexing that might occur with a long single surface, so it would have more stiff control surfaces then.

The wing tips fluttered wildly during a high speed pass. I need to figure out a way to strengthen the section that extends out past the spar.
