Six is pretty young for the coordination required. Especially when the glider is flying towards them. If they can handle the Sim, then you can move to a real plane.
If you want to teach him to build, get a Gambler. Well designed, sensible build and repairable - but not bulletproof. You might consider a small zip start to get dependable altitude while learning the sticks.
