Keel Cooling


Most modern harbor tug's i have seen have an enclosed cooling system and radiators / keel coolers under the hull and so not have to draw water from around them to cool on board equipment before pumping it overboard once it has done its cooling job.

Seeing as I'm building a modern style harbor tug with a heavy duty pair of Z Drives, i thought i would have an attempt at producing a pair of keel coolers to fit under the hull.
This tug will be doing some heavy pushing and shoving, so I'm going to do an enclosed cooling system with the ESC's cooled and the motor's cooled via these keel coolers and a pump.

Using some brass and copper tube, I've produced these...

Are you threading your own end-caps or buying them ready made somewhere? (I have a displacement oiler and oil trap I need to make in the next week or two...

Very nice, you have been busy the last couple of months! It would be interesting to measure the temperature of the equipment with and without the cooling system to see how well it works compared to the normal "suck in in from the pond, and pump it out the side" approach. It will look impressive though, and that's what really counts .

whats driving the pump, seperate motor or is it PTO'd on the propshaft?

Hmmm - I seem to think that Toes showed us a nifty pump he had milled up a few months back..... I wonder....

Most keel pipe systems use a circulating pump, like an automotive water pump. No pressure as such created. I'm willing to bet that your pipes would woke fine by convection alone. Simplify the system, and if that is insufficient add a pump later.
Hats off to you for replicating the system.

It looks really neat! But I am betting the usual 'suck and discharge' cooling would actually keep the components cooler than this enclosed system.

I have seen, and considered something similar, but as a between component cooler.
So that the water would come into the boat, cool a component, dissapate heat
through the "keel cooler, then run through the next component, then overboard...

It's neat to see someone setting one up in any configuration.

Each system will have a separate pump / motor Ghost and in to a common header tank... though i do like your idea of PTO from the prop shafts...

Of course an open system would be "cooler" but it isn't as "cool"
