Help!

Durable fast large payload plane?

I need a plane that is strong enough to take a few hard hits, big enough to carry a 3-5lb payload, relatively stable and fast enough to be fun(>70mph). any ideas?

Sounds like a custom job for you. I'd suggest a large flying wing, or a large foamie jet, but it won't be fun until you remove the payload.

Custom yep.............possibly spad ....payload and toughness easy with a Mud Duck huge fun but not the speed..........16mph............ unless you build a new fuselage..................?

Scale big pod and booms designs..............probably twins Gotha - Powered Glider inspired .........or Cessna Skymaster. FW UHU.. P38 or P61 Blackwidow

Blue foam construction obeechi or brown papercovered covered - Flying Boxcar, HS Argosy inspired ......... nice but its a 4 engine, still thats more power.

More conventional GAF nomad, BN Islander large scale.

Giant Pusher jets HS sea vixen or Vulcan inspired large swept wing clean for speed but big wing area for carrying payloads.

Search the AP and UAV threads youl find Carbon exoskeleton wings but they are not cheap..............a podded wing design might be easier you could take your inspiration from a vintage design called Gross Wing... https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...ge+flyingwings Cherpaa sounds good given the update treatment

Enlarge and update blue foam ribs or wing core on carbon tapering tube spars, use fishing rod/pole sections, with box LE and TE's

You could build a giant Mugi Evo..its been done.

Is there any foreseeable design flaw in completely plating a 60-100" EPP wing in carbon?

Cost ................ and repairs........... you need to ask someone who can afford to play with that stuff.

how about a classic

Plenty of room in the fuse...the cby 3 had more headroom than a 747

You need to go ask the sailplane guys these questions.

Basically, you're asking for a big electric sailplane. The design and construction methods are all well known, but they're not cheap.

In short, no, no problem in covering a foam wing in fiberglass, basalt, or carbon, so long as you do it right. You will need a decent spar as well.

You might be able to find an off-the-shelf airframe that can do this job if you look at a specialist sailplane supplier. Heck, your payload is only a couple of kilos... you might be able to cram it into a Cularis.
