Astro Micro Gearbox (8.0 g, 3.3:1) for Astro Flight 010 Brushless Motor

I was wondering if this new Astro Flight Micro Gearbox can be easily fit to a Tiger Moth. - http://www.aeromicro.com/Astro010GB2.htm

Also does it use this motor? - Motor

It is expensive, but looks like if you had that in a Moth and went full throttle into pavement, nothing would break. I mean the current GWS gearbox with Astro is still Plastic and wears and can break.
I want my Moth to last for a long time on the same equipment.

Hey Leslie-

I couldn't get your "motor" link to work, but the gearbox mounts to the standard direct drive 010 motor. It's a lot of thrust for a Tiger Moth, but it would work. You'd have to figure out a motor mount as the 010 does not have one. That's one of the nice things about using the GWS box, it has a mount built in.

==but looks like if you had that in a Moth and went full throttle into pavement, nothing would break==

If you ran full throttle into the pavement, I would expect that it would indeed break. The motor might survive, but the gearbox more than likely would not. At a minimum it would probably bend the shaft. This gearbox would definitely be more durable than a GWS box, but on the other hand it's cheap to fix or replace a GWS box. As for looks, the AF polished aluminum box wins hands down!

Thanks Tres,

So the Aluminum gearbox doesn't have a hole for the stick to mount onto?

Also is it lighter than the GWS plastic setup or heavier?

This gearbox looks to be a firewall mount. I think the 'mount on a stick' design is pretty exclusive to GWS gearboxes, at least from what I've found. I think the Astro unit may be a few grams less than the GWS boxes, until you add the prop adapter, then it's a few grams more. Looks like a super unit for those that can use the 3.33 ratio, and want something more robust. I need higher ratios and stick mounting, so I use the GWS boxes from Aeromicro.
