Build Log

Tony Nijhuis Douglas DC-3 Dakota kit Build.

Here we go two three four.
This is my build log of a Tony Nijhuis DC-3 Dakota form the RCM&E plan and parts kit. Ive had quick search of the net, but not found any other threads on this model, so let start one here.

As with all my model builds this is not going to be the fasted build ever, in fact I brought the kit back in 2004 when the plans were first published. Ever since the kit has sat in my loft. Still better late than never it time to make a start, motivated by the fact that a fellow club mate has also started building one and is already a long ways a head of me. It would be so nice though to have a pair of Daks flying together.

The wing span is 1836mm (72) AUW is 3.180 Kg (7 lb) max
My model will be finished in civil marking of G-APML, the first aircraft I ever flow on.

Two left thumbs
Thanks for starting this thread. A DC 3 was also the first airliner I ever got aloft in. The design seems very straightforward and traditional - just the way I like them!

Now I just hope I can keep up the build rate.

Roy,

Good start . . . I have just purchased the plan for TN Lancaster from Cosford this weekend :-) I have his Sunderland built and flying. Always liked the DC3 will have to build one at some point . . .

Do you know George from 4-Max? I used to belong to the Basingstoke MAC.

O yes we know George and before this project is done I can guarantee I will be crossing his palm with silver .

Quick up date on the build today, one fuselage side is sheeted.

Roy,

Looking good - sheetin is nice and neat, youve obviously done this before, no sign of copious amounts of filler either :-)

Hi Scott
I think the photo may flatter me unduly
I've seen George today, crossed his palm with silver. Said I would.

Great that you build this so i had an little example. i had an B-17 Kit from Tony and had done a little beginnig. and so i had a first question: you had now sheeting the fuselage, how will you build in the elevator and fix it in correct position. thats is something i think about at this time.

Hi Ralph

Yes that had me thinking for some time to. On the Dak, the tail plane runs along the top of the centre stringer of the fuselage half. I wish I had seen that before I started building, as I would have taken more time to line it up

My only other idea was to fit the assembled fuselage in a jig, and line it up with the wing mount.

thewildweasel. They don't write songs like that any more

siddus. No not yet just the glue I have two motors I brought a couple of years back for another project I may use.

I brought the EuroKits retracts today from Motors & Rotors. they should arrive in the post later this week.

Thanks for all your interest

Roy
