US cities may have to be bulldozed in order to survive

The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.

Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.

Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.

Mr Kildee said he will concentrate on 50 cities, identified in a recent study by the Brookings Institution, an influential Washington think-tank, as potentially needing to shrink substantially to cope with their declining fortunes.

Most are former industrial cities in the "rust belt" of America's Mid-West and North East. They include Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Memphis.

The local NPR station did a show on this. The show is really quite good.

I happened to listen to most of it while driving in traffic. I missed the first part of the show with some guy from the Cato institute. (some loss ) Planning for downsized cities makes sense to me. Sort of the opposite of growth.

Also Mr. Kildee is doing more than just bulldozing empty houses. He's also renovating the downtown area (like converting a hotel abandoned for 30 some years into usable space).

why destroy them... seems like soon enough we will open the floodgates and all the people from south of the border could use some free houses... why destroy them? give them to all the coolaid drinkers that think BO will buy their house for them!

If there's too much there for the locals to take care of... make the most of it, downsize, and in the end the quality of the town will likely be improved. Hey, if they turn that unused land into an awfully nice park (or model airplane oasis), it might help what businesses have a chance of staying there.

Another way for the Feds to spend money they don't have. It's a local problem - the locals should pay for it. I suggest some house burning parties.

AND Michael Savage! He had his radio show grow while he lived there. But he still hates San Francisco as every stereotype pushing redneck would regarding that area being all about the gays...
