Done with the HZ Super Cub, whats next?
Ive had my HZ Super Cub for 2 weeks now and I have outgrown it, I need to move up to 4 or 5 channel. I heard the 182 Skylane is a good upgrade should i get that or go straight to gas? The skylane is about $160 AND comparable gas plane prices are about $350 so crashing a $350 plane would suck.
If gas what planes do you guys recommend? I was looking at the Hobbico NexSTAR 46. Thanks for the input. // chad |

This is the Batteries and Chargers Forum.
I flew glow starting in 1957 and wet total electric 6 years ago. Many great 4 channel electrics. IMO a great one is a Great Planes Electro Stick. I have two and my son has one. Scorpion 3020-12 ,11X7 APC E prop, 70A Suppo ESC ,seperate BEC, 4 HS 82 servos and a 3 or 4S LiPoly or a 4 or 5S A123 makes a great sports plane. Mine will hover, knife edge,4 point, and all the standard pattern manuvers. The Plug and play motor and ESC are fair but the servos are wear and the gears strip way to easy,IMO. Charles |

That said, not so fast, you may be ready for more than 3 channels, but if you think you have out grown the Super Cub after just 2 weeks than you just aren't doing it right! I have a flying buddy who does crazy 3D with a Typhoon 2, Multiplex Acromaster, and an Airfoilz Yak, and yet still rings out his Super Cub like it's rented! I suggest upgrading your Super Cub to brushless, lipo, and maybe even ailerons before you go and get a whole new plane. I think you'll find it can do things you never knew were possible. Go check out this thread, post two lists about 50 ways to modify your Super Cub. It's a great plane, don't sell it short! https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...08#post9597508 Just my $.02, Eric |

I agree with Eric... One my friend had also SuperCub as his first plane and when he replaced old electronics with brushless motor and Lipo batteries, it is like a new plane. It climbs fast and as far as one can see. It can be unbelievable, but It is also a good glider. When you make ailerons, it can be also more acrobatic and more fun to fly. Also consider frequency 2.4Ghz

Maybe not outgrown it but I'm ready to move onto something with ailerons and a bit more power without spending the $150 on upgrades to my SC. I'm going to upgrade to Lipo and change the propeller and thats about it for this plane.

Not that you asked, Air, but I have seen a lot of people "outgrow" an airplane before they were ready to move on. I still fly an old 3 channel Seniorita (yes, glow, but bear with me) and get a great deal of pleasure from (and find a real challenge in), for example, making 5 landings in the same place, without a bounce. Or a good straight scale-like take off. Or cutting the motor up high to practice "dead Stick" landings at my feet.
I guess I'm an advanced flyer (I can do the Sportsman pattern with a .40 stick) and enjoy it. I also fly gliders. I've been modeling for 65 years (RC for 30) and find that whenever I get bored with one thing, there are always other things to try -- or to practice. Never was a contest flyer, btw; I find enough challenge in beating myself. Build a kit that will take the radio/power set from your Cub if you update the Cub. There is a lot you can do with your Cub for fun, even without upgrades. howell |
