Ok, bringing focus back on diesels:

A bowl loaded with calories, followed by a cup of coffee and a sip of my favourite brandy (Gronstedt's - recommended !)...and some contemplation over the Alag X5, Alag X4 and the old Froggie...

(Can you imagine the engines far L/H and far R/H are similar displacement?)

One of my favourite displays are these different Dyno's here. The AH copy on the left and the original at the right. One way of detecting a copy from original is the angle of the exhaust ports. Would you believe I had an original Dyno, less tank, for sale on this Classifieds here for grabs a few weeks ago and NO ONE wanted to buy it until a Swiss collector realised the rarity. In the middle are two miniature Dyno's, one by AH again and I forgot who made the even smaller one, any help there you diesel specialists ?

Thusius

Extremely rare Thusius unfortunately missing the forced cooling parts. If I could get measurments and pictures of a complete one I would repro them only, I do know no one that does have a complete one.... Dieter Rother in Germany probably does but how to reach that fellow I would not know, he's got no pc...

No need to get ratty Brian, I apologised for being off topic but I was seeking information to enhance my knowledge on the subject. Although I only fly electric these days due to circumstances it doesn't mean that I am not interested in, and subscribe to, this thread and I feel that it was a legitimate question to ask as Reginald had raised the matter. And, BTW, I notice that Ken's post and photo concerned a fire involving a PETROL engine, which was technically also off topic

Thread OP
Good one Danny.

Ever wonder what size electric motor and battery would be required to run for full power, say 5 minutes, to be equivalent of a 2.5 diesel with maybe 30 cc fuel?

From a weight factor, I think the diesel is still going to be the lighter package, even lighter when the fuel is gone.

On the other hand it's going to be really hard to beat the electric throttle.

My DAD flies 8 minutes with 20 cc of fuel feeding its Taifun Zyklon 2.5cc engine swinging an 11x4 prop at 7400rpm.
The engine is fitted with an exhaust collector and 6 inches of 3/16" i.d. plastic tubing.

Throttling is as good as electric would have to offer. I can spiral the model on idle from great heights, doodle around a bit on idle for touch-and-go's and always get instant response when opening the throttle up after any length of time at idle.
And yes, I do fly electric also, but that is another subject altogether, starting with a good estimate of the desired power and rpm.
I would guess 150 W (0.2 HP) @ 9000~11000 rpm is a realistic approwimation of a decent silenced 2.5cc diesel in a practical situation

John, what diesels have you tried?
All the PAW TBR RC engines produced over the last 20 years throttle superbly and are very powerful (I have four).
The throttling is at least as good as on my PZ Radian and they start immediately.
Concerning consumption, my 1.49 idles for 20 min on a 30cc TR tank.
The 19 currently flying my Electra flies a heavy plane for around 20 mins on a 62cc tank, and the 60 that I purchased recently, after a good break-in, idles for 15 mins on an 88cc tank.
Of course, everyone should fly to their own preference but, for RC sport flying, a TBR PAW will stand comparison with anything, unless you want to keep your hands clean of course!

Sorry I didn't see any of you fellows at the Euro-Collecto. We spent the day and night before with Wolfgang and Isabella Hoepfner. Now I know how to take apart a WOHM Stern Diezel, but I won't!
