Bugaboo


Bugaboo must be rather large as the ED looks like a 1/2 A engine on the nose. How big is it? Weight, span and area? Looks good Warren. FF or R/C? Jack

Hi Jack,
I enlargeed the Bugaboo to about 50".
Haven't weighed it but it's not very much.
It flies rudder elevator RC and is quite aerobatic if you dive a little first.
Loops, rolls, barrels, etc all good fun.

It has flown on the ED Comp, Penny Slot, ED Hunter (ballistic), Indian Mills 3.36 RC and original Mils 2.4.

The Penny Slot was a little marginal, The Comp Special is enough, but nothing to spare. The Mills are about perfect.

Dismantling & cleaning goes on, providing a good opportunity to show the internals as well....

Here's a trusty old AM-25 MkII, in company with a less common, Czech made "Junior" 2 cc (made by the manufacturer "Start", late 50's...)

Thanks Colin.
The ED info is very interesting.
It is rather “mind boggling” , at least to me, that 300,000 diesel units were made and sold. I think Cox claimed over 1,000,000 (million)! And of course all the other model engines, to name just a few, OS, Enya, Webra, McCoy, OK, etc.
If only 1/10th of these model engines were actually “flown”, where did all the modelers go? I got my first Cox about 1958 and my first ETA 2.5 about 1962.
In some ways it was a long time ago, in other ways not so long ago! I don’t think too many modelers will be keeping their electrics as collectables.

AM diesel, excellent pictures


Gluehand, thanks for the pictures.
Now that’s the way we should be posting our diesel pictures, all the parts after cleaning.

I really like to “see” the insides when possible. On the other hand, I no longer take apart “new engines” unless I really need too.

Anyways, your pictures are perfect. Excellent set up, lighting, focus, back ground…a real pro here.

We should all take a lesson here.

I’d have to say that we are really dieseling on.

My TT has arrived.


Well, I’m making the first post.

My TT from Rishi has arrived in my mail box just to-day. It probably was in Toronto, Canada early last week.

I am going to take pictures of this package before I open it, as this is a very special package.

Also, if there is any one reading/following this thread that is in the “business” and may be interested in carrying on with the TT diesel line, castings/dies, tooling may be available from Rishi. You will have to contact him.

Thanks John......I'm far from beeing a "pro" though.....this way of photographing started when I purchased a package of multi-coloured xerox papers....I soon made the "pale yellow" sheet my favourite background (although I will eventually try other colours..). I let the camera do most of the "pro" stuff. Anyone with a decent camera + a sheet of paper could do this....

I've got several uncleaned engines...some of them "cleaned" in a rough way after running/flying, then stashed aside....long ago....
A few engines were hastly purchased in "petrified" condition, and I have yet to do something about them.....also, I've got a couple of "NIB" DC engines, still dead stuck from the "factory test run" before dispatch...
I've also got a few more "modern" RC glow engines in serious need of "treatment"...storing them in a clean & well oiled condition would make me feel better...even these engines deserve some attention.
So, after finding this efficient cleaning method, I guess there will be more posts of this kind....

Er, maybe an appropriate side business for the new owners of the SAAB trade mark....
As you may know, SAAB Automobiles is now closed down, sold, butchered, and the new owners plan to use the "badge" on electric vehicles...
As SAAB once started with 2-cyl. 2-strokes, a Taplin engagement would kind of close the loop.....
Of course I'm not serious..... ...but isn't the end of the SAAB story a sad thing..?....

Agreed Gluehand, SAAB's demise, as many other great names from the motoring world past, is sad. It's a long time since I saw a SAAB with a 2 stroke motor. A friend of mine had one, but it was the later 3 cylinder version - sounded great, went welll, but did have the smoking habit!

Hi John; My first engine was also a Cox (010) in about 1962 it cost less than a pound, didn't have $ in NZ in those days. Found some photos of a ETA 2.5cc the block is marked ETA 15 this must be in cubic inches also an article about the ETA 5 and 29 didn't know there was a NZ connection. http://modelenginenews.org/cardfile/eta5.html
