Not wishing to hijack this thread, but its developed into about the only "vintage model engine" thread to be found on any of the forums. As a collector (and I'll no doubt get howled down for this) could we not expand it by including vintage glow engines in this discussion as well ? The majority will vote & decide with their mouse ! BOB

On the other hand, we can talk about anything you want to, but I'd like to keep to just diesels.
I don't collect ignition. Not that I don't like them, but there is just so much time to go around.
Talk to Bill; he's really going strong with the old engines. He must have at least a hundred by now, not to mention all the new ones.

John, I don't have much interest in sparkies either, so that's not what I was suggesting - I did say specifically vintage glow engines.

It is not really meant as a vintage model engine thread (even though it is in the Vintage & Old-Timer Designs forum). It just happens that there are more vintage type diesels than modern ones.

You could start a new thread on the subject of vintage engines in general - glow or ignition - diesels are almost an endangered species and I am weary of "diluting" them amongst other types of engines.

Bob, sorry I didn't pay attention...glow engines. Again, see what Bill says. He does have a lot of glow engines, Enya 240 V twins , radials, etc, some still in the box.

Beauty or beast...?


Hi,

I just spotted this Engel Rebell on an auction site. As it seems, it may be be a possible 'bargain' (although anything may happen just before closing...).
As I'm waiting for a Schlosser, I know I'd better keep my eyes off other engines for a while, but obviously my curiousity was awakened when seeing this...

I have no strong relation to these Rebels, as they 'weren't sold in my town', and I have heard very little of them. It looks nice though.

Does anyone know if this engine was considered a 'lemon', or was it one of the 'good ones'...?
A brief history (or a link to..) would be nice too....

Gluehand, I can't really be of much help for that engine.
There is a 1.5 and a 2.5 cc with the same name.
One has a green, the other blue anodizing on the cylinder.
There was mention made several posts back showing a different colour.
See hastf1b's post, page 97 post #1442.
Check out the logo....perhaps Indian made?

Nothing so far, John.......hoping for next week....

In the meantime I study this highly interesting Czech book, by Jiri Kalina......boy I wish I'd understand more of the text....although the more you try to read, the more conclusions you make, thus gradually picking up useful info....
Nice photos though, of a huge world of engines rarely seen outside eastern Europe....

Gluehand, there are several really nice diesels shown there from 1950. I'd guess that at about that time they were still way ahead of the small glow engines and way above the small sparkies!
I'll get a few pictures up of the .5 Schlosser.
I've taken it apart to see what's inside, but that'll have to wait until another day.
Just checked the picture and the head bolt is shown loose.
For comparison in size, I'll match a couple of other small engines.

For size comparison, the Cox 0.02 (Pee Wee) is .3 cc and the
Baby Bee Cox 0.049 is a little less than 1 cc.
A "hot 0.049" puts out about 16 oz static thrust when allowed to rev on a small prop. The diesel "lugs" a much larger prop to get the thrust, but lacks the speed.

I read "REBELL", and I always thought that the Engel Rebell engines were made in Hungary.

Yes the 'Rebel's" were made by Hungarian FOK.
Below, the similarity to the FOK range is clearly seen.
I think there's no doubt the engine of the auction is a 'real' Rebel.

At John's post 109/1631, an Indian Aurora/Kumar engine is shown, featuring the 'Strawberry' logo of the Engels....how did that happen...?

The Kumar engine's "Strawberry" logo is different from the "Engel" logo. have a look
